User Experience Lead

Position Overview Skills & Exp.

The User Experience Lead is responsible for leading the efforts of the UX team on large-scale digital programs and projects. The UX Lead creates, collaborates and supervises project deliverables of the user experience project team, made up of Interaction Designers, Visual Designers and Writers/Editors and will provide inspiration and guidance throughout the creative process. UX Leads work closely with members of the UX team, Project Managers, Product Managers and Technical Leads in creating and maintaining the project vision. The UX Lead will be involved in each step of the UX process, including project planning, discovery, user research and analysis, design, planning, and execution.

Responsibilities:

Facilitates discovery meetings (including kickoff, and definition of business and project objectives).

Conducts stakeholder interviews, brainstorming sessions, and features and functionality workshops.

Creates UX strategy deliverables, including: discovery findings, creative brief, competitive and landscape analyses, and concept documentation.

Leads the development of UX team project deliverables to communicate the UX strategy and rationale such as project plans, research, personas, concept documents, task lists, workflows, information architecture, wireframes, page maps, interaction and behavior specifications, visual design and content strategy. On some projects, the UX lead will be directly responsible for the creation of these deliverables as well.

Work with technology experts to uncover and understand technology requirements and capabilities as they relate to design deliverables.

Work with product managers, internal business stakeholders and functional teams to define product requirements that best achieve business goals as identified by key stakeholders.

Help direct user research and translate findings into tangible designs, including: heuristic reviews, usability testing, competitive product analysis, web metrics data, field research, quantitative surveys, user interviews and persona development.

Present design concepts, user needs, and design rationale to multidisciplinary teams, as well as to key stakeholders and business partners.

BA or MA in Interaction Design, Visual Design, Cognitive Science, or HCI, or equivalent experience.

8 – 12 years experience in user experience design, user analysis and requirements definition for Internet-related and mobile projects. Experience in the following areas a plus: online publishing, ecommerce, online financial services or online retail services.

Passion for creating great user experiences with actionable knowledge of the digital landscape including current industry and user trends, emerging technologies, and standards.

A strategic thinker who is able to foster creativity and innovative thinking is important. Translating the big picture, strategic opportunities for the digital channel into practical applications is expected.

A smart and intellectually curious leader with demonstrated experience leading the UX practice on projects in a collaborative environment.

Ability to incorporate both stakeholder/user feedback and design critiques.

Portfolio which exhibits innovative design solutions.

Ability to critique the quality of both product experience design and visual design.

Ability to lead requirements elicitation discussions.

Ability to analyze both quantitative and qualitative data and present findings and recommendations.

Strong oral and written communication skills, to communicate with technical and non-technical audiences and at all levels of the organization (including senior management).

Must be able to foster ideas, assess strategic options and engage effectively across a wide continuum of leaders. Must have the intellectual bandwidth to drive effective dialogue with the business and a fact-based approach to build credibility.

Demonstrated experience effectively leading teams through consensus and persuasion versus direct authority.

Proficiency with design and prototyping tools such Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, CS3 Suite, OmniGraffle, Flash, and basic HTML/CSS.

Experience working in an agile project methodology is a plus.
