Denyse Bridger I seem to have a talent for words, and empathy for people. So, I’d have to say communication. I listen to what people say, and often what they don’t say, vocally or the words on a page/screen. I trust my emotional response to people and it’s rarely wrong.

I think the first time I realized that was something I did well was when I was in junior high and, as a family, we went to the Farmer’s Museum in Cooperstown, NY. There was a woman weaving on a loom and I was fascinated. The others all left to go look at other things, but my dad stayed with me as I asked questions and listened to the woman weave stories as she wove with her shuttle.
Afterward, as we walked away, my dad said to me, “How do you do that?”
I was confused and didn’t know what he was talking about, so he rephrased his question and asked again, “How do you know what to say to get her to talk like that? To tell those stories?”
I didn’t have a clue what I did. It just came natural and I told him that. But from that day on, I watched myself as people would open up to me, listening to what I said as well as what they said. I discovered I don’t really need to think about it, the questions and comments come naturally.

In the rest of my life, I’m good at dog training — it’s the job that pays the bills — and I’m getting to be good at trying new things. Life isn’t an adventure unless you try new things, after all!

If I was dropped into the middle of a crowd of strangers, I’d start talking to the people closest to me, then work my way out to the edge to see where I am.
