A study by Canadian researchers released earlier this month found no evidence linking obstructive sleep apnea with cancer. As this report is likely to increase public awareness and discussion of sleep apnea, prosthodontist Dr. Saj Jivraj of the Anacapa Dental Art Institute in Ventura County, Calif., is urging members of the media and the public to look beyond surgery and Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) as the only remedies for sleep apnea.
Woodland Hills, CA (PRWEB) August 26, 2014
A study by Canadian researchers released Aug. 5 in the Canadian Medical Association Journal found no evidence linking obstructive sleep apnea with cancer.
There is a common, non-surgical solution that highly trained dentists use to treat the condition – Oral Appliance Therapy.
CPAP still is considered the “standard" treatment by many physicians, but with usage rates reportedly less than 50 percent, many patients would be better served using a proven, alternative therapy, Dr. Jivraj said.
“The Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) guidelines say that patients with mild or moderate sleep apnea should be given a choice between a CPAP machine or an oral appliance,†Dr. Jivraj said. “Patients deserve to be told of all their sleep apnea treatment options, including Oral Appliance Therapy.â€
While many people associate Dr. Jivraj and his partner, Dr. Mamaly Reshad, with their Woodland Hills cosmetic dentistry services, the Anacapa Dental Art Institute can provide patients with an oral appliance to address their sleep apnea.
The oral appliance created to treat sleep apnea usually consists of custom-made, removable upper and lower trays that fit over the patient’s teeth. A mechanism connects the upper and lower trays and holds the wearers’ jaw forward while he or she sleeps.
By holding the jaw forward, the oral appliance moves the tongue forward and keeps it from blocking the airway during sleep, which is what occurs in sleep apnea.
Prosthodontists like Dr. Jivraj and Dr. Reshad have advanced dental training about oral health conditions, including sleep apnea, and specialize in fitting and finding the correct position to treat mild to moderate cases of sleep apnea without surgery or CPAP.
Dr. Jivraj and Dr. Reshad are award-winning prosthodontists. They are specialists in implant, cosmetic and reconstructive dentistry. Both are former chairmen of the University of Southern California School of Dentistry’s Fixed Prosthodontics and Operative Dentistry section. They also are international lecturers and published authors.
Dr. Jivraj earned his degree at the University of Manchester in his native England. He received advanced prosthodontic training at the USC School of Dentistry. He has published numerous articles on aesthetic and implant dentistry in peer-reviewed journals, and has presented on implant dentistry and advanced prosthodontic procedures nationally and internationally.
Dr. Jivraj is co-author of the textbook “Treatment Planning in Implant Dentistry,†which is used around the world. He is on the editorial board of the highly prestigious Journal of Esthetic and Restorative Dentistry, ad hoc reviewer for the Journal of Prosthetic Dentistry and is associate clinical editor for Dental Teamwork magazine.
He currently holds a faculty position as an associate clinical professor at the USC School of Dentistry, clinical teacher at the Eastman Dental Institute in London and is on the board of directors for the British Academy of Restorative Dentistry.
Jivraj was voted “Best of USA†by his peers in 2008.
Dr. Reshad, a fellow prosthodontist, is an internationally known expert in restorative and cosmetic dental procedures. He has published in numerous peer-reviewed journals and textbooks on various topics related to prosthodontics, aesthetics and implant dentistry.
Dr. Reshad trained at Kings College Dental School followed by the Eastman Dental Institute in London.
Dr. Reshad is on the editorial board for the Journal of Esthetic and Restorative Dentistry. He is an honorary clinical teacher at the Eastman Dental Institute and a member of the faculty of the Global Institute for Dental Education.
