Brace yourselves mums and dads as there are lots of unmissable family movie releases ahead of us in 2017 and 2018. Take your pick.

2017 will be filled with superheroes, super villains, pirates and beautiful heroines too, animations to make us laugh, sing and cry. Everybody will have a film to look forward to. I don’t think there has ever been such a line up.

Disney has recently announced lots of new family movie releases for 2017 and 2018. I am personally looking forward to Johnny Depp‘s return as Jack Sparrow while my 10 year old son is desperate to see Cars 3. And we both look forward to the next Star Wars installment. A new Spiderman movie starring Tom Holland is on the cards for the Summer. I really look forward to it as Tom was absolutely hilarious in Captain America: Civil War.

2017

Sing (27 January 2017)

Sing is an amazing animation by the same film makers behind Despicable me. We all loved it and we will post a review very soon. Watch this space!  Meantime enjoy this teaser trailer.

An Amazon princess leaves her island home to explore the world and, in doing so, becomes one of the world’s greatest heroes.

Logan (2017)

In the near future, an aging Wolverine and Professor X must protect a young female clone of Wolverine from an evil organization led by Nathanial Essex. This movie won’t be suitable for all children but maybe 12+ or teenagers might enjoy it. And it’s probably the last time Hugh Jackman will take on the Wolverine role so I’d say it’s unmissable.

Director: James Mangold

Stars: Hugh Jackman, Boyd Holbrook, Doris Morgado, Patrick Stewart

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2  (28 April 2017)

Set to the all-new sonic backdrop of Awesome Mixtape #2, Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” continues the team’s adventures as they traverse the outer reaches of the cosmos. The Guardians must fight to keep their newfound family together as they unravel the mystery of Peter Quill’s true parentage. Old foes become new allies and fan-favorite characters from the classic comics will come to our heroes’ aid as the Marvel Cinematic Universe continues to expand.

PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: DEAD MEN TELL NO TALES (26 May 2017)

Johnny Depp returns to the big screen as the iconic, swashbuckling anti-hero Jack Sparrow in the all-new “Pirates of the Caribbean: Salazar’s Revenge.” The rip-roaring adventure finds down-on-his-luck Captain Jack feeling the winds of ill-fortune blowing strongly his way when deadly ghost sailors, led by the terrifying Captain Salazar (Javier Bardem), escape from the Devil’s Triangle bent on killing every pirate at sea—notably Jack. Jack’s only hope of survival lies in the legendary Trident of Poseidon, but to find it he must forge an uneasy alliance with Carina Smyth (Kaya Scodelario), a brilliant and beautiful astronomer, and Henry (Brenton Thwaites), a headstrong young sailor in the Royal Navy. At the helm of the Dying Gull, his pitifully small and shabby ship, Captain Jack seeks not only to reverse his recent spate of ill fortune, but to save his very life from the most formidable and malicious foe he has ever faced.

Despicable Me 3 (30 June 2017)

Gru’s long lost twin (Drew) will emerge and there will be a theme of sibling rivalry. From the trailer it looks like it’s going to be another super film with the most hilarious new villain who loves bubble gums and dancing  to 80s tunes/Michael Jackson.

Director: Kyle Balda, Pierre Coffin

Stars: Kristen Wiig, Steve Carell, Miranda Cosgrove, Trey Parker

Spider-Man: Homecoming (7 July 2017)

A young Peter Parker/Spider-Man begins to navigate his newfound identity as the web-slinging superhero. I cannot wait to see Tom Holland in action again. He was Tom was absolutely hilarious in Captain America: Civil War.

Director: Jon Watts

Stars: Marisa Tomei, Tom Holland, Zendaya, Robert Downey Jr.

Disney’s Cars 3 (14 July 2017)

Blindsided by a new generation of blazing-fast racers, the legendary Lightning McQueen (voice of Owen Wilson) is suddenly pushed out of the sport he loves. To get back in the game, he will need the help of an eager young race technician, Cruz Ramirez, with her own plan to win, plus inspiration from the late Fabulous Hudson Hornet and a few unexpected turns. Proving that #95 isn’t through yet will test the heart of a champion on Piston Cup Racing’s biggest stage!

THOR: RAGNAROK (27 October 2017)

“Thor: Ragnarok,” the third installment of Marvel’s popular Norse Super Hero, is directed by Oscar®-nominated filmmaker Taika Waititi (“Two Cars, One Night,” “What We Do in the Shadows,” “Hunt for the Wilderpeople”).  Kevin Feige will produce the film, joined by executive producers Louis D’Esposito, Brad Winderbaum, Victoria Alonso, Thomas M. Hammel and Stan Lee.

STARRING
CHRIS HEMSWORTH, TOM HIDDLESTON, IDRIS ELBA AND SIR ANTHONY HOPKINS.
DIRECTED BY TAIKA WAITITI

COCO (8 December 2017)

STAR WARS: EPISODE VIII  (15 December 2017)

Following the tragic death of Carrie Fisher after Christmas Disney/Lucas Film might not go ahead with the next Star Wars installment as they had planned to do so for mid December 2017. This loss is devastating and will certainly have consequences in the film production.

2018

WRECK-IT RALPH sequel (Spring 2018)

Wreck-It Ralph is heading back to the big screen, and this time, he’s wrecking the internet. The Oscar®-nominated Walt Disney Animation Studios team from the original film is reteaming for the follow-up, including director Rich Moore (“Zootopia,” “The Simpsons”) and producer Clark Spencer (“Zootropolis,” “Bolt”). Phil Johnston (writer, “Wreck-It Ralph,” “Zootopia,” “Cedar Rapids”) joins Moore as director and a writer on the project. John C. Reilly and Sarah Silverman return as the bad-guy-turned-good, Ralph, and the girl with the game-winning glitch, Vanellope von Schweetz. The untitled sequel will hit UK cinemas Spring 2018.

I was lucky to be able to interview Rich Moore when he came to London for the release of Zootropolis. Read my behind the scenes interview here.

Rich has been developing the new Wreck it Ralph since shortly after the release of the first film, and while directing this year’s critically-acclaimed hit “Zootopia” with Byron Howard. This is what he had to say: “From the moment we started working on the first ‘Wreck-It Ralph,’ we knew there were so many possibilities with these characters. This time, Ralph’s wrecking wreaks havoc on the Web—as only he can do. Characters we loved in the first film are back and we are ecstatic to be working with them—and the actors who voice them—once again.”

When “Wreck-It Ralph” opened in November 2012, it turned in the highest opening weekend ever for a Walt Disney Animation Studios film at the time of release. Nominated for an Oscar® and Golden Globe® for best animated feature, “Wreck-It Ralph” won the PGA Award for outstanding producer of an animated theatrical motion picture as well as five Annie Awards, including best animated feature, director, cast and screenplay. The film was named best animated feature by the Broadcast Film Critics Association, earned outstanding achievement in casting for an animated feature by the Casting Society of America, and won the Kids’ Choice Award for favorite animated movie.
