Heston at Heathrow
Welcome to our weekly round-up of all that’s happening in London’s food and drink scene.
Inside this week: charity, the City and Heston Blumenthal
Food for good
London’s restaurant scene is showing its caring side this week, with the launch of two fundraising campaigns. Shoreditch restaurant The Clove Club is leading an appeal for aid to support victims of Typhoon Haiyan which is already feared to have killed thousands in the Philippines. Haiyan-Aid is asking restaurants in the capital to add £1 on to bills, and then match the amount raised. Hibiscus, The Modern Pantry, Shake Shack and Jamie Oliver’s Barbecoa are among the fast-growing list of venues already taking part alongside The Clove Club. The format draws inspiration from Street Smart, which coincidentally also launches for its 16th year today. Visit their website to book from over 550 London restaurants where £1 will be added to your bill and donated to homelessness charities.
Heston at Heathrow
Compounding its reputation as the world’s foodiest airport, Heathrow has recruited its second Michelin-star chef (Gordon Ramsay has Plane Food in T5) in the form of Heston Blumenthal. The as-yet-unnamed restaurant in T2 will effectively be the molecular chef’s second in the capital, along with Dinner, and will serve recipes inspired by his In search of Perfection TV series. Heston, however, won’t be found in the kitchen.
Winter in the City
Winter is here, but two new City pop-ups which launched this week are determined to help us make the most of it. The not-so-imaginatively named Bar BBQ has arrived next to Broadgate ice-rink serving up US-style hickory smoked ribs and bun loads of pulled pork, barbacoa beef and the likes. Sit in or take away, seven days a week until the new year. Down at St. Paul’s, Bob’s & Co has set-up home for the winter months in the upstairs of The Rising Sun pub on Carter Lane. It follows their stint serving lobsters at Borough Market, but comes complete with a whole host of other seafood options.
Openings this week
This week has seen another slew of new openings in the run-up to Christmas. Earlham Street Clubhouse launched last night in Covent Garden offering sourdough pizzas by-the-slice for £3.50 and giving diners the chance to create their own playlists via a smartphone app. Ramsay protegee Angela Hartnett has thrown open the doors of Cafe Murano, a Northern-Italian restaurant focused on regional cooking in St. James’. Searcy’s, known for their wine bars, have opened Sixtyone in Mayfair where head chef Arnaud Stevens draws on experience at Maze Grill to create a modern British menu that sits alongside a list of more than 200 bottles. Today also sees the opening of Rabot 1745, a chocolate themed restaurant in Borough Market from Hotel Chocolat, and marks the official launch (anyone get to the soft launch?) of Foxlow in Clerkenwell, brought to us by the team behind Hawksmoor – look out for a 10-hour-cooked beef shortrib with kimchee!
