Green Rooms, the first London hotel to cater to visiting artists, has launched.
Many of London’s hotels support the arts in their own way. Some, like The Corinthia, run artist-in-residence programmes. Others, such as Artist Residence and Andaz Liverpool Street, ask artists to decorate their rooms. However, this is the first time a hotel with the express purpose of supporting and encouraging the arts has been created.
Green Rooms officially opened on May 19th in Wood Green. Artists, from musicians to thespians, get preferential rates, which start from £18 for a dormitory bed or £54 for a single room. Anyone can stay but artists can submit proof of their artistry, such as a link to their website, to secure lower prices. However, non-artists only pay an extra £10 on their rooms.
The hotel is ideal for anyone who might need somewhere to stay during a theatre run or arts exhibition, as well as a one or two-night stay. Perhaps some might even use it for a longer-term living solution if they’re trying to establish a reputation in the capital.
Green Rooms offers Standard Rooms, with three-quarter-sized beds, En-Suite Doubles, and Corner Rooms (larger rooms with either a king or two twins).
For those on a tight budget, dorms are also an option, either mixed or female-only. Two studio apartments are great for extended stays, with a double bed, kitchen, workspace and en-suite in each.
The hotel has two communal spaces. On the ground floor, you’ll find the lobby, bar, lounge, and restaurant across an open-plan space. The lounge doubles as exhibition space, which can hold up to 120 people for events. A garden space provides an area to relax, with decking, benches, and tables.
The restaurant is perhaps the most exciting part of the ground floor space. Every six months to a year, a new restaurant will be hosted there to give opportunities to emerging restaurateurs. Colombian Street Kitchen is the first resident to set up there.
On the third floor, a multi-use gallery and workspace serve as a bar and social space in the evenings.
It’s large enough for up to 200 people and can be hired for rehearsals, exhibitions, screenings, and more.
Over the next few months, we can start to watch how artists make use of this hotel and how it fulfills its promise to be an integral part of the arts community.
