St Pancras Renaissance is continuing their series of masterclasses with some lessons on how to take better photos with your smartphone.

Hands up who uses their smartphone as their main camera?

Some of us have something more professional, but your phone is always a faithful backup. We can spend all day snapping pics of our surroundings, our friends, our dogs, and ourselves. But how much do you pay attention to the quality of the photo? Smartphone cameras might be small, but that doesn’t mean they can’t be mighty and take awesome pictures.

The new masterclasses at St Pancras Renaissance focus on smartphone photography, combined with getting to know the local area.

The aim is to learn how to take street photos and get under the skin of King’s Cross. Run in partnership with photography experts Foto Ruta, the classes will teach the fundamentals of street photography. Participants will learn how to capture the best shots using only their smartphones in the new St Pancras Renaissance eatery, MI + ME.

Now, here’s the exciting part. After learning how to wield their phone’s camera, attendees then get to go out around King’s Cross. They will be given a set of clues and a map and will go and take pictures of things they think capture the clues. Then it’s back to MI + ME for a glass of wine, a presentation of everyone’s photos, and a constructive critique from Foto Ruta.

The classes will run weekly from June 7th 2016, but there’s also another opportunity to become a master smartphone photographer.

There will be a special three-hour class on June 16th (Thursday) from 6pm. The class is the same but a little longer to give you more time to hone your skills. The weekly classes are free, but the three-hour event, which is part of the Global Day of Discovery, is £5 per person.

The masterclasses programme has been running since March, covering such diverse topics as fashion, meat and beer, and gin. There are still more classes to come on journalism, design, and literature.
