September 22 CACTUS

Cactus is back and “The American Led Zeppelin” is coming at you with tour dates in both America and Europe. All told, those of us who were too young to have seen Cactus in the 70’s are in for a treat.

Those are tall words, but that is in fact what people were saying about Cactus when this first “Super Group” hit the scene in 1970. Cactus flamed out brightly after only four albums at the end of 1972. With rockers such as Van Halen, Monster Magnet, King’s X, Billy Sheehan, David Coverdale, Kid Rock and Ted Nugent having been documented in interviews as fans of the loud and proud 70’s sensation, Cactus’s mark in Rock and Roll history is undisputed.

The current Cactus lineup includes original members Carmie Appice, Jim McCarty along with Jimmy Kunes (vocals), Randy Pratt (harmonica) and Pete Bremy (bass).

September 23 NEW RIDERS OF THE PURPLE SAGE

New Riders of the Purple Sage, signed to Columbia Records by Clive Davis, released its eponymous first album in September 1971 to widespread acclaim. In the next 11 years the band toured and released over 12 albums, selling over 4 million records. NRPS began as a part-time spin-off from the Grateful Dead when Jerry Garcia (pedal steel guitar), Phil Lesh (bass) and Mickey Hart (drums) teamed up with John Dawson (guitar, vocals) and David Nelson (guitar). Although early live appearances were viewed as an informal warm-up to the main attraction, the group quickly established an independent identity through the strength of Dawson’s original songs. By 1970 Dave Torbert had replaced Lesh, and Spencer Dryden, formerly of Jefferson Airplane, had joined as the group’s permanent drummer. Garcia remained in both The Dead and The New Riders until he found himself overcommitted, at which time Buddy Cage replaced him and the classic NRPS lineup was born. Original NRPS bass player Dave Torbert and drummer Spencer Dryden have passed away, co-founder John Dawson passed away in 2009 due to ongoing health problems. His considerable talents will be missed but his songs and musical legacy will live on. Before he passed he had given his blessing and was excited to know his music is being heard live again by a whole new generation of fans. The new lineup vows to keep the NRPS spirit and tunes alive by taking them to fans everywhere. The band recently teamed up with Grateful Dead lyricist Robert Hunter and released its first CD in twenty years to rave reviews, Where I Come From (Woodstock Records).

September 25 WISHBONE ASH

The classic rock bands of the late 60’s and early 70’s enjoy a unique place in popular musical history. The Beatles had gone their separate ways, Britain had already experienced the Blues Boom, and Psychedelia had made its impact. The creative possibilities were infinite. Wishbone Ash embarked on the nascent Progressive Rock scene in 1969, taking full advantage of a fertile musical environment where they produced a distinctive brand of melodic rock. Inspired equally by British folk traditions and American jazz and R&B, the group played to public and critical acclaim.

More than 45 years later, having pioneered the use of twin lead guitars, Wishbone Ash has gained worldwide recognition, based firmly on a regime of relentless touring. And their latest studio release, “Blue Horizon,” continues to solidify their reputation as a musical force to be reckoned with.

September 27 DORO

DORO Pesch is a living legend! And now the entire world knows it, after the “Queen of Rock and Metal” has received her first ever “Legends-Award” at England’s renowned “Golden Gods Awards” on July 17th 2013 at O2 Arena, London. A true highlight of a career that’s been going on for three decades. She’s received numerous Gold and Platinum awards for over 10 million records sold, has performed over 2,800 live shows on four continents and in 60 different countries around the world, she’s released 16 studio records and four DVDs, and has had countless cover stories on all the most important Music Magazines. She’s performed on giant world tours in the USA, South America, China, Japan, Australia, Germany, Russia, Spain and all over Europe where she’s worshipped like a goddess and has millions of fans around the globe.

December 6 THE WEEPIES

Since they met in a Cambridge folk club 9 years ago, The Weepies have progressed from an indie duo playing house concerts, to ranks on the Billboard Charts. Though they now have sales in the hundreds of thousands, the Weepies have kept a surprisingly low profile; they haven’t toured at all since 2006 but that’s about to change.

Crystallizing their organic acoustic sound and pop harmonies, the California duo has come up with their deepest, most accessible record yet. Third in a trilogy for Nettwerk Records, The Weepies once again worked with drummer Frank Lenz, guitarist Meg Toohey and string player Oliver Kraus, adding bass legends Tony Levin and Larry Klein to the mix.
