Ink Tank is an evolving artist collective with the expressed purpose of executing creative ideas in all media. Through collaboration and experimentation, the flux of members in the collective creates a space for projects that compliment each other’s abilities and motivations. The individual parts discover a whole within the unity of sharing ideas and offering support. Ink Tank is also very serious about having fun.

What was your favorite part of the Diana World Tour in Austin?
Collaboration is a big part of what we do at Ink Tank, so finding another community of creative individuals at Lomography was a nice treat. And working on a small sculpture as a collective group was an interesting challenge. Usually Ink Tank’s work explodes visually, so having to contain it within the context of a Diana camera was new.
If you only had one day/night in Austin, how would you spend your time?
Barton Springs, Quality Seafood, bike ride through the eastside ending at Co-Lab Projects.
What elements of Austin (or Texas in general) inspire your work?
The nurturing community that encourages and champions new ideas from new people. This town has been a great place to work together and create with people from multiple disciplines and interests.
What is the most exciting thing that you are working on right now?
We’re amping up for a Powdered Wig Party as an unofficial part of the East Austin Studio Tour. It’s going to be a decadent affair, packed with performances, collaboration and opulence.
On December 21 at Co-Lab projects, we are completing our End of the World trilogy with Armageddon Outta Here. This project will be completely interactive for all in attendance, providing opportunities to pick your camp and gear up for the apocalypse.

Of all the mediums that you work in, which are you most interested in right now? What kinds of materials are you drawn to?
We are interested in and motivated by working with re-purposed and salvaged materials. We just had an amazing and eye-opening trip to the Goodwill Resource Facility. It was crazy to see all of the things that people discard, encouraging and challenging us to focus on re-using those materials as well as materials we’ve utilized in the past for our new projects.
With Ink Tank being made up of so many different people, how do you guys work together as a group to communicate one cohesive visual message?
Our communication is a series of lengthy Facebook threads on our private group page. Things really go down a rabbit hole sometimes, with old music videos and 90s horror movies. As far as shows go, we break it down to Project Managers who will be the point person for decisions and visual aesthetics. It also helps that we are individuals, with our own interests and capabilities. Each of us brings a different perspective, and even more helpful, multiple solutions for the same problem.
You seem to have a busy schedule! What’s your best advice to handling multiple projects and staying creative?
We are all so busy! It’s hard to say no sometimes, especially when so many great opportunities come across our path. We are all lucky to be working in creative fields professionally, so it’s easy to have it translate into our work. With 12 members, individuals usually step up when they have more time or interest in a project. It’s sort of an ebb and flow, for who helps with what when. Then there are times when it’s all hands on deck and we pull all-nighters for a week to meet deadlines.
