Begin your tour in Dam Square, a town square which lies in the city’s historical center. There, you will find the neoclassical Royal Palace, the 15th Century Gothic Nieuwe Kerk, Madame Tussaud’s Wax Museum, the National Monument (memorial for World War II victims), and the high-end De Bijenkorf department store. Here’s an interesting tidbit about Amsterdam: its name was derived from Amstelredamme, which means “a dam in the river Amstel.” Aside from strolling around its river namesake, every visitor must also experience its historic canals for which Amsterdam came to be called the “Venice of the North.” Herengracht, Prinsengracht, and Keizergracht are the city’s main canals.
