If you've decided that 2014 is the year that you finally ditch that outdated kitchen that you've been living with then you might be interested to know what are the top kitchen design trends. If you look through any of the home interior magazines the message that seems to be loud and clear can be conveyed in just two words “sleek” and “simple”. So let's take a look into how that fits into the modern day kitchen of 2014: Glass fronted cabinets and open shelving Whether your style is Arts and Craft or elegant and traditional, glass fronted kitchen cabinets and open shelving look great in any style of kitchen. Glass front cabinets can be simple in design with an etched pattern or a more decorative muntin style. They have the effect of making your kitchen look lighter and more spacious as opposed to having a solid bank of wood kitchen cabinets hung on the wall. It also gives you a chance to show off pretty china and, if you get lighting installed in the cabinets, it shows off your glassware to great effect and also works as soft mood lighting in the room. Open shelves are a much cheaper alternative to kitchen cabinetry and can be placed on an otherwise redundant wall to offer much needed additional storage. They can be painted to blend in seamlessly with the surroundings or you could use an accent shade of paint to inject a pop of color. Dark paint colors What color will your cabinets be this year? Well it's true to say that white kitchen cabinets never go out of style but it's likely that dark colors such as black, with deepest blue and red also creeping in, are likely to give white a run for its money. Unless you've got a massive kitchen with light streaming in, it's best to use dark colors in moderation. For example use white on perimeter cabinetry and then use black cabinets beneath a kitchen island. Black countertops Whether you opt for solid surface, granite or quartz, then black is the color of choice for countertops. Black is a neutral color which works well with just about any cabinets, appliances or kitchen style. If you're concerned about using too much black then again use it in moderation. Perhaps for your island countertop while the rest of the countertops are a lighter shade. Farmhouse sinks Farmhouse sinks also known as “apron front sinks” were once confined to a country kitchen style but these large roomy sinks are growing in popularity and are perfect for washing large items and filling tall pots without splashing everywhere else and yourself in the process. If you look around you'll find farmhouse sinks in a variety of styles suitable even for contemporary kitchens and in varying materials, including stainless steel. Grey appliances GE introduced slate color appliances not knowing how how well they would be received and actually sold far more than they had anticipated. They have also announced that they will be including more appliances in this shade this year. It seems that shiny stainless steel is giving way to more subtle shades of grey but stainless steel is unlikely to go by the wayside completely.
