LOGAN, W.Va. — Logan City Hall was packed on Wednesday night with visitors on a field trip from Logan Middle School who got an up close and personal look at how civics works in the real world.
Teachers Angie Adkins and Leighann Branham shepherded eighth graders Presley Damron, Tyson Epperhart, Bobby Adkins, KJ Gertz; seventh graders Lexi Baisden, Livia Epperhart, Hailey Fleming; sixth graders Mara Vandaff, Anna Holstein and Scotty Browning and fifth graders Joey Canterbury, Hillary Gore, Chase Hatfield, Télyn Napier and Harlee Quick to the council chambers for the November monthly meeting of the Logan City Council.
“They are here to learn about how local government works in action,” City Clerk Amber Miller Viars said of the Logan Middle School Leadership Team.
Mayor Serafino Nolletti and the Clerk explained the nature of how the city’s government works, the different branches of the city, including the water and sanitation departments, street department and fire and police departments as well as how the council itself operates and functions. The teachers explained to council members different projects and activities the students participated in (such as a Veteran’s Day project), and what they learned by working with civic groups such as the Rotary Club and Lions Club of Logan.
The clerk explained to the children that by being on the agenda of the meeting on Wednesday that they would become a part of the city’s history through its council meeting records.
