Fans of post-apocalyptic turn-based RPG delights will finally get their hands on Wasteland 2 in late August, according to developer inXile Entertainment.

After 26 years, Wasteland, the game that set the foundations on which the legendary Fallout series was built is bound to receive a worthy sequel. In 2012, inXile set a goal of $900.000 on Kickstarter in order to develop a worthy successor to the RPG classic. Surpassing all expectations, the project became one of the highest-funded the crowd-funding site had seen up to that point, raising more than $2.9 million. The sum, which exceeded all initial stretch goals set by the developer, pushed the initial release target of October 2013 well into 2014 as inXile increased the scope of the game and added extra features.

“It’s exciting to be in the home stretch on a game I’ve been wanting to get to for the last two decades,” said Wasteland 2 director Brian Fargo, who was also in charge of the original game, back in 1988. “The feedback from our backers on the early beta has been great and I’m proud of the way Wasteland 2 is shaping up. The scope of the game is immense with a word count that is greater than The Lord of the Rings novels and a solid 50 hour+ game experience that has diversity from beginning to end. My goal has been to over deliver on our backer’s expectations for Wasteland 2.”

InXile hasn’t provided a specific date in August for when the game will be available. When that day comes at the “end of August,” Wasteland 2 will be available on PC, Mac, and Linux.

Wasteland 2 is available to play on Steam Early Access for 60$. The developers have repeatedly said that Wasteland 2 will be cheaper at retail, and the high cost now is primarily to balance early access against Kickstarter backer rewards. Despite a few frustrating bugs and the need for overall polish on certain areas, the game is essentially finished. It’s packed with content and it’s bound to provide a solid and rich experience for old post-apocalyptic RPG fans and newcomers alike.
