I wrote this post as part of my participation in a blog tour on behalf of Johnson & Johnson Consumer Inc. McNeil Consumer Healthcare Division, the makers of PEPCID®. I received compensation to thank me for taking the time to participate. However, all opinions expressed are my own.

Spending some time in Portland, Maine? Don’t miss out on all these sweet stops while you’re there!

It’s no secret that I love to travel, and I love to eat and I really REALLY love my sweets! But unfortunately, my body doesn’t like them quite as much, and it usually throws a bit of heartburn my way just to prove a point. But I’m not one to pass up a cone of ice cream or a slice of chocolate cake, instead, I fight my heartburn with PEPCID® COMPLETE®. This way I can do what I love and do my job without the burden of a burning chest, throat, and ears. Yes, when I get heartburn, it likes to take over my whole upper body, fun right?

That’s why I’m so excited to be a PEPCID® Tastemaker and to have been tasked with Celebrating Local Eats! So today I’m going to take you to the Portland Old Port for some of the best sugary eats in Maine. My hope is that you’re already planning a trip to Maine this summer and you can add these to your itinerary, or maybe you’re from here and need a good place to cure that sweet tooth and we want to help you find it. All of the places are within the Old Port and within a 15-minute walking radius – cupcakes, cookies, pies, gelato, donuts – we tried them all! So get your fat pants ready, because it’s time to get tasting!

Foley’s Gourmet Bakery | 1 Monument Way, Portland, ME 04101

If you’re in the Old Port and you’re looking for the classics, you’ve got to swing into Foley’s. It’s just next door to the parking garage where I highly recommend you park your car for the day as the city can get a little confusing to navigate thanks to its horrible street name system. But seriously, the scones are perfection, the pastries are HUGE, and the brownies are decadent and sweet. We recommend the

Recommendations: Blueberry Scone, Peanut Butter Brownie, and Almond Croissant.

Bam Bam Bakery | 267 Commercial Street, Portland, ME 04101

Have dietary restrictions? Don’t fret; we know just the place you should go! Everything at Bam Bam is gluten free and with a huge selection of desserts there are dairy-free options, nut-free options, vegan options, and the list goes on. But the best part is that the desserts are INCREDIBLE, even if you don’t have dietary restrictions, you’ll love this place!

Recommendations: We recommend: Whoopie Pies and the Chocolate Mousse Cake.

The Holy Donut | 7 Exchange Street, Portland, ME 04101

Guys, these are no ordinary donuts. They’re POTATO donuts! Made with Maine-grown potatoes from Aroostook County and other wholesome ingredients. With a huge variety of flavors from fruity to savory, you’re in for a serious treat! Made fresh every morning, get the early to get a warm one! They have gluten free and vegan donuts too!

Recommendations: Allen’s Coffee Brandy, Triple Berry Holy Cannoli, Sweet Potato.

Standard Baking Co | 75 Commerical Street, Portland, ME 04101

If you’re looking for that cozy old fashioned bakery, THIS IS IT! The place is hopping, and every person who walks through the door is looking for the Almond Croissant, but if you’re not there super early (as in when they open) you’re not going to get one. But don’t worry, they have plenty of other sweet treats to choose from! Plus a huge selection of incredible bread!

Recommendations: Chocolate Walnut Rye Cookies (Best cookie I have EVER had – get it warm and a dozen to go!) and the Almond Croissants.

Gelato Fiasco | 425 Fore Street, Portland, ME 04101

We tried both gelato places in the Old Port, and Gelato Fiasco was a clear winner! So many flavors to choose from, including Netflix and Chill, which is a vanilla bean gelato loaded with peanut butter cups, brownie bits, and a caramel swirl with the occasional kiss ;). You can try all the flavors before you choose and some of them might surprise you. The sizes are enormous, so get a small, it’s probably more than enough. They don’t do scoops, so you can get as many flavors as you want in any size and can get pints to go!

Recommendations: Sweet Resurgam (the one that wins ALL the awards), Apple Passionfruit, Chinese Five Spice, and Raspberry Truffle.

East End Cupcakes | 426 Fore Street, Portland, ME 04101

Looking for the perfect cupcakes, you’ll find the right across the street from Gelato Fiasco. Standard flavors like vanilla and chocolate are accompanied by daily specials.

Recommendations: Red Velvet and Orange Cardamom.

Two Fat Cats | 47 India Street, Portland, ME 04101

Pie, it wouldn’t be a complete sweets tour without this staple dessert! And there’s only one place you should even think about grabbing one in the Old Port. They have a daily flavor that they serve by the slice, or you can buy a whole pie in any flavor, or get the personal sampler with four of their most popular flavors! They serve savory pies too!

Recommendations: The Blueberry because it’s kind of required ;), The Sour Cherry, and the New England Bog (berries and chocolate crumble) if they’re serving it that day.

Duckfat | 43 Middle Street, Portland, ME 04101

The only thing you need to know about this place is that they serve donut holes that have been fried in duck fat and then rolled in cinnamon sugar and then dipped in caramel sauce. They serve a pretty fantastic selection of entrees as well, and their homemade sodas are superb!

Recommendations: Donut Holes and Grape Soda Gelato Float

Alright, are you still with me? Or are you on your way to Portland, Maine? There’s a reason they call it the “New Portland”, there’s so many great foodie places jammed into a small area! Which one was your favorite? We tried a lot more than this yesterday, but these were the best of the best and thankfully I wasn’t slowed down by the discomfort of heartburn because I had my PEPCID® with me. Heartburn triggers vary from person to person, for me it’s iced tea, meat, and sweets, three of the things I love most – go figure, right? Do you suffer from heartburn too?
