Austin Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew- Friday, Saturday and Sunday at 8 p.m., From the battle of the sexes to the marriage of true minds, Austin Shakespeare transforms The Taming of the Shrew to the Austin of the 1890s, where city folk and cowboys collide. Once Upon a Mattress- Friday, 7 p.m., Saturday, 2 and 7 p.m. and Sunday at 6 p.m., If you thought you knew the story of “The Princess and The Pea”, you may be in for a walloping surprise!  Did you know, for instance, that Princess Winnifred actually swam the moat to reach Prince Dauntless the Drab?  Or that it may not have been the pea at all that caused the princess a sleepless night?  Carried on a wave of beguiling songs, but turns hilarious and raucous, romantic and melodic, this rollicking spin on the familiar classic of royal courtship and comeuppance provides for some side-splitting shenanigans.  Chances are, you’ll never look at the fairy tale quite the same way again! Shakespeare at the Market- Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Seating at 6:30 p.m., play begins at 7p.m. Present Company Theatre presents Shakespeare at the Market! That’s right! We are bringing back the much enjoyed event this April & May. Join us on the rooftop plaza every Friday, Saturday, & Sunday: April 17th – May 10th. Ashes, Ashes at Scottish Rite Theater- Saturday at 11 a.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m., Nini lives in a steampunk world without sun, blue sky, trees or grass. All that was vibrant has been exploited and destroyed leaving behind a blanket of ashes and darkness. In her quest to save the world, Nini journeys into a mysterious underworld of coal mining shafts and caverns where living walls may hold the secret to life. On her adventure, she must summon all of her courage to meet the challenges that lie in front of her, to defeat the darkness and bring light and love back to the world above. Cenicienta at ZACH Theatre- Saturday, 11 a.m. and  2 p.m.; Sunday at 2 and 4:30 p.m.  Easily understood in English and Spanish, this bilingual stage-adaptation of Cinderella tackles culture, familia, and the power of language.  This production is in collaboration with Teatro Vivo. Pecan Street Festival- Saturday and Sunday. The Pecan Street Festival is a FREE two-day arts festival held twice yearly in downtown Austin’s Sixth Street Historic District. Taking place the first weekend in May and the last weekend in September, the juried festival attracts hundreds of local and national artisans offering original handcrafted creations in a variety of mediums, from metal, wood, fiber, clay, leather, glass and stone to repurposed materials of all kinds. Pre-Cinco de Mayo Celebration- 5:30 – 8:00 p.m. Celebrate Cinco de Mayo and spend your evening at Metz Recreation Center. Families will enjoy free games, food, door prizes and Tejano music. Stay after the celebration to enjoy a Movie Under the Stars! Beginning at dusk, Metz will show Rise of the Guardians on the front lawn. So bring your blankets and chairs! Whole Foods Domain First Friday- 5:30 to 8:00 p.m.  Sip wine & sample delicious bites of food in each department around the store on the first Friday of every month. Proceeds are donated to Autism Speaks Austin. Tickets are $10 per adult and can be purchased online or at the door. Children under 12 are free when accompanied by a paying adult. Concert in the Park: Suede (Cedar Park)- 7-10 p.m. Bring your lawn chairs or blankets as there will plenty of area available. Food concessions will be available, but you are welcome to bring a picnic and your own ice chest. Glass containers are prohibited. Lemonade Day Austin- Lemonade Day is a nation-wide event that teaches kids the skills they need to be successful in the future. Youth learn to set goals, develop a business plan, establish a budget, seek investors, provide customer service, and give back to the community. The community can support these hard-working kids by purchasing lemonade from their stands all over Austin. For a list of locations where you buy get lemonade, click here.

Family Kayaking/ Canoeing- 9 a.m. to noon. Join Camacho Recreation Center for a beautiful paddle on Lady Bird Lake.  This is a great opportunity for the whole family to enjoy an active and healthy morning on the water.  Cost: $4 (City of Austin resident) / $5 (non-resident). Lady Bird Lake.

Williamson Museum Pioneer Day (Round Rock)- 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Docents from the Williamson Museum will provide hands-on activities for all ages. Step back in time and experience the pioneer life amid the restored cabins of Old Settlers Park.  Play tug-of-war, churn butter, attend a pioneer school and more at this family-friendly FREE event. Violet Crown Spring Festival- 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. This fun festival will feature arts and crafts vendors, kid’s activities including spin art, face painting, hula hoops, life-sized Jenga and chess, Legos, a craft station, Sparkle Stories and a cake walk, live music from Jungle Jill and the Jaybirds, Lunch with Danny, Roger Beck and the Knights of Texas Swing, belly dancing and refreshments. Greek Festival at Central Market North Lamar-  Greek Chalk Art from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Renowned local artist Jonathan Horstmann decorates our store-front sidewalks with Passport Greece-themed art. From noon to 3 p.m., local artist from Creative Action help children learn and enjoy the art of working with clay, just like the Ancient Greeks. Greek Art for Kids where kids can decorate their own Greek bracelets and headbands is also happening on the Cafe deck. There will be Greek wine tasting for the adults and R&B sounds of Akina Adderley on the deck from 6:30 – 9:00 p.m.  Central Market North Lamar Blvd.

Lake Travis Spring Fest-  11 a.m. to 9 p.m. The biggest time in the smallest town! SpringFest is back at the Hill Country Galleria! Join us starting at 11am for kids performances on the main stage. Live music starts at 2pm. Artisan shopping all day and a Kidzone that will keep the kids busy for hours. Don’t forget to get your new boat for the season at the Boat Expo. Taste central Texas beer and wine in the BrewHaus/WineStomp tent. Things wrap up with the Cord Carpenter Band starting at 7:30. FREE! Hill Country Galleria, 12700 Hill Country Blvd.

Dia de la Familia- 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Austin Community College invites families and students to the ninth annual Día de la Familia festival to enjoy the McCallum High School Ballet Folklorico as they provide colorful performances, refreshments and children’s activities while learning about important resources and information about ACC. The event is FREE and open to the public. ACC- Riverside Campus, 1020 Grove Blvd.

CelebrAsia- 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Help decide the winner of the AARC’s second annual Battle of the Asian Food Trucks, with our theme ingredient coconut! Plus, cultural performances, kids’ activities, games, educational food booths, artisan marketplace, community outreach fair, heritage showcases and more! 2015 Wein & Saengerfest (New Braunfels)-  Noon to 10 p.m. Along with wine and craft beer tasting, this event offers a host of entertainment and activities that include continuous live music, a grape stomp, artisan market, food seminars, a Chef’s Showdown, and activities for the kids – culminating with a street dance at Main Plaza! Jewelry Making Workshop for Teens (RSVP)- 1 p.m. Learn how to make fun, easy jewelry with a unique spin on Shrinky Dinks… not just for little kids anymore. Copy a pattern or create your own. We’ll explore basic jewelry making techniques with tools, wire, and findings as well. Create several pieces of your own! Makes for a great gift and a fun piece to wear! Cost: $15. Beer Garden Social- 2-4 p.m., The Austin History Center invites you to its Third Annual “Beer Garden Social” at Scholz Garden. This year’s program, “Music of the Civil War,” will feature performances of traditional Americana music from the Frontier Brigade Band, followed by a performance of traditional American Spirituals, a genre formed from slave songs as they working in the fields, by the local group Bells of Joy. The entire afternoon enjoy 19th Century youth games and activities brought to you by APL Youth Services. The event is FREE and open to the public and will feature a pop-up library with items from APL’s collection curated especially for the event. Body Shift Preents Nine-Tet- 3:30 p.m.,  Watch a special a site-specific work directed by Julie Nathanielsz. Stay afterwards for a post-show discussion with Forklift Danceworks’ Allison Orr. Performers include Susie Angel, Bobbie Edwards, Kathey Ferland, Peggy Lamb, Silva Laukkanen, Juan Muñoz, Julie Nathanielsz, Tanya Winters, and Donna Woods. Rock n Roll Rentals Grand Opening-  4-8 p.m.,  The public is invited to attend special party in celebration of the company’s second location in the Austin area, which opened in early February 2015. The event will feature an outdoor stage with live music from local favorites: cosmic Latin DJ crew Peligrosa, the popular surf-influenced rock band Shivery Shakes, jazz hip-hop band MODAL, and more. Beyond the stellar music, there will be a variety of family-friendly events and activities for attendees of all ages. Austin’s own Dub Academy will be on site teaching guests how to DJ and mix tracks on professional turntables, while Earthquaker Devices will be on site to demo their various products firsthand for patrons. UMLAUF Family Day- Noon to 4 p.m.,  Family Days offer special, hands-on programs designed for families with children, four to ten years old. Families have the opportunity to explore the UMLAUF while engaging in creative activities. Listen to stories, do yoga in the garden, watch sculpture demos, enjoy live music and more. FREE!  Schedule: 12:30 yoga, 1:00 story time, 1:30 clay creations, 2:00 music by Armstrong Community Music School. Free First Sunday: Roller Derby- Noon to 3 p.m. Discover the connection between Austin and modern roller derby! Families with kids ages five and up can participate in hands-on activities, drop in at an art-making station, and meet some of the Texas Rollergirls themselves. FREE! Community Art Sundays- 1-4 p.m. Creative Action will host Community Art Sundays once each month from February to May! Each event will include active workshops, interactive art experiences, and performances by professional artists that celebrate community through dance, music, food, gardening, parades, and inventing. Sunday Funday at Neill-Cochran House Museum- 1-4 p.m. Every first Sunday of the month the Neill-Cochran House Museum will be open to the public for FREE. Each Sunday will include an activity (Ojos de Dios and Paper Plate Sombrero) highlighting a theme that embodies both the history of Texas and the Neill-Cochran House Museum. Farmgrass Fest- 1-9 p.m., Enjoy live music, good food, a kid’s area and lots of fun for the entire family. All the proceeds from the festival will go to an emergency medical fund for farmers in central Texas. General admission: $20, kids 12 and under free. Simmons Family Farm, Niederwald.

Austin Opera’s Don Giovanni- 3 p.m. Austin Opera culminates its 2014-15 Season with Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s critically acclaimed dark comedy, Don Giovanni. Join us for this incredible production featuring powerful vocals, the captivating virtuoso of Mozart, and a unique set where seduction, entertainment and danger collide. Don Giovanni is both charismatic and repulsive in his cavalier manipulations of others. But Don Giovanni, with all his arrogance, promiscuity and cunning, is finally undone by a vengeful victim incapable of outwit or defeat. This masterpiece, deemed “the greatest opera ever written” by George Bernard Shaw, brings justice to an outlandishly lecherous and wild man. Tickets start at $15. Family Fun Day at Art Garage- 3-6 p.m., The Art Garage hosts a Free Family Fun day where families are welcome to pop in and create crafts, get to know The Art Garage and enjoy in-studio discounts. This month’s theme is Let’s Get Campy. This is a fun, free activity for children to meet the teachers and see some of the fun art projects we will be creating this summer.  It is a great opportunity for parents to ask questions, see our studio and meet the excellent team of people who are The Art Garage! Students will have the opportunity to participate in free art activities, and meet Elsa.  Parents will have an opportunity to enter to win a free week of Summer Art Camp for their child. FREE! Heritage House Ice Cream Social (Pflugerville)- 1-4 p.m., Come tour the historical Heritage House and museum on Sunday, May 3 between 1 p.m. – 4 p.m. and enjoy an ice cream social with homemade ice cream! There is no cost for this event, so come visit! The Heritage House is located in Heritage Park at 901 Old Austin Hutto Road.
