Kerbey Lane Cafe Celebrates 35 Years- This May marks 35 years that Kerbey Lane Cafe has been making Austin greater with their delicious pancakes and queso. On May 4th from 6 a.m. to May 5th at 6 a.m., Kerbey Lane will donate 100% of net proceeds from ALL Austin locations to the United Way of Central Texas! In addition, there will be a fun birthday celebration at all locations from 6-8 p.m. on May 4th, complete with miniature horses, face painting and balloon animals. Seventh Annual Cinco de Mayo Downtown Block Party- 5:00 to 9:00 p.m., The annual festival covers the entire block of West Second Street between Guadalupe and San Antonio, and celebrates the rich heritage and culture of Mexico with food, beverages, and entertainment for all ages. With more than 5,000 in attendance in 2014, this year1s Downtown Block Party returns with live performances by Mariachi Relampago, Celsius, Gina Chavez, Bidi Bidi Banda & Cilantro Boombox, in addition to face painting and a photobooth along the street of the celebration. La Condesa will also serve a menu featuring grilled Mexican street corn, taquitos, and more from the restaurant’s taco truck, El Cubico. Stephen F. Frostin’, South Congress Hotel’s new ice cream truck will make it’s debut at the block party and will be serving up homemade ice creams. These popular street foods will be paired with La Condesa’s famous margaritas, agua frescas, and beverages by event sponsors Tequila Cazadores, Dos Equis, and Tecate. A Look Ahead: Weekend Events
Pollyana Theatre’s The Big Bolt- May 9-17, 2015 with a special Scout performance on Mother’s Day, Sunday, May 10. This production is written and designed specifically to appeal to the developmental and educational needs of very young children ages 3 – 7. The play explores the concept of cause and effect as well as basic pre-math concepts through the story of a little girl named Jimmi. Jimmi discovers what can happen when a seemingly unimportant but very big bolt is taken out of its intended place. Long Center for Performing Arts, 701 W. Riverside Drive.
Dia de los Madres (Round Rock)- Saturday, May 9, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., The event features a performance by The Biscuit Brothers, Hopewell Middle School mariachi group, the Isaac Sisters and Round Rock Ballet Folklorico. Other activities include: arts and crafts for kids, a chance to take pictures with mom, and free carnations for mothers. The event promises to be full of music and fun for the entire family! FREE! Touch-a-Truck- Saturday, May 9, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Touch-A-Truck is a family friendly event that hosts a wide variety of vehicles for kids of all ages to play on while learning about the automobiles and how they help serve their communities. This year’s Touch-A-Truck will feature — in addition to the vehicles — live music, plenty of food trucks, and a Kid Zone complete with a petting zoo, face painting, barrel-train rides and much more. Touch-A-Truck is a fun way for families to bond as their children explore vehicles they have seen in movies, books, or just driving down the street. Family Day at Harry Ransom Center- Saturday, May 9, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Visit Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and enjoy activities for the young and young at heart. Participate in writing activities with teaching artists from Austin Public Library Friends Foundation’s Badgerdog Creative Writing Program or engage with Lewis Carroll-inspired math activities with local math literacy organization Math Happens. University of Texas at Austin museum theater students lead visitors through the galleries. Additional activities include docent-led exhibition tours and story times in the theater. 28th Annual O. Henry Pun-Off- Saturday, May 9, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., Come celebrate a day of wordplay at the O. Henry Museum. Minor Mishap Marching Band as the live musical act at 11 a.m. Competition runs from noon to 6 p.m. There will be food trucks, a used-book sale, and lots of mind-boggling wit. FREE!O. Afternoon High Tea at Cafe Ruckus- Sunday, May 10 at 11 a.m., 1:30 and 4:00 p.m. The special tradition of taking afternoon tea continues in the heart of downtown Austin. Tea time happens every Sunday afternoon when Cafe Ruckus transforms into a Victorian tea room. Step back in time as you sip bottomless cups of loose leaf tea, nibble on delicate finger sandwiches and indulge in decadent desserts presented on a three-tiered server. Flying Theater Machine: Three Wishes- Sunday, May 10, 2 p.m. Three Wishes uses suggestions from audience members to inspire the story of a group of kids who happen upon a playfully mischievous genie. Will they get what they’ve always wished for or will they discover they had what they wanted all along? Please join us for Three Wishes and see what happens when our wildest dreams come true! In these fully improvised stories, we’ll find many opportunities for the children in the audience (and sometimes their adults!) to participate and guide the story and even play on stage! Blanton Museum of Art Drop-in Public Tour, Special Themed Tour: Mother’s Day- Sunday, May 10, from 3-4 p.m., This is special-themed tour celebrating Mother’s Day. A designed tour to celebrate motherhood (and grandmotherhood), care-giving, children and family, and more. Free with museum admission.
Moms Skate FREE at Playland Skate Center- Sunday, May 10th. Playland Skate Center will be celebrating moms during our Sunday session from 12 noon to 5pm. Admission for moms is free with a paid child’s admission. Make it a family event or a special outing for mom and kids! Either way, it’s going to be great because mom doesn’t have to pay and she’ll get to spend time with her loved ones roller skating. As an added bonus, the little ones can play in the soft play indoor playground!
Music Under the Star- Sunday, May 10, 4-7:30 p.m. Bring your family, a picnic dinner, and a blanket or chairs to the Bullock Texas State History Museum every Sunday in May to enjoy free music concerts presented by the American Federation of Musicians. All concerts are free, family-friendly and highlight local musical talent.
