The Quebec government is about to invest $750,000 into a program meant to encourage immigrants in Canada to take French courses. According to Quebec Immigration Minister Kathleen Weil, the program focuses on attracting immigrant spouses who relocate through the skilled worker program and those coming under the family reunification program.

Quebec is a Francophone province and the immigrants’ French language skills are taken into consideration throughout the selection process. But French is just as important in the integration process, especially for the applicant’s family members whose language skills often need improvement.

There are about 26,000 people in Quebec already taking French classes and authorities plan to increase this number by at least 10 percent. Through the recently announced program, immigrants arriving in Quebec will be able to attend free full-time, part-time or online language classes. They will also receive specialized language training in various professional areas, such as nursing, health-care, engineering and applied sciences, business, law, and administration. Those who opt for the full-time classes can receive financial assistance of $115 per week. Both full-time and part-time attendants are eligible for reimbursement of child care expenses and transportation.
