Perhaps you have just finished building a beautiful wooden deck base. Maybe your current deck is in need of a makeover. Whatever the reason, this summer would be a great time for some decorative additions, to make your deck something special! There is a variety of ways that you can decorate your deck and make it even more aesthetically pleasing, as well as, one of a kind!

1. Lighting

A great enhancer for any deck, lighting can help in so many ways. Perhaps the best way is by making it possible for you and your family to continue to enjoy the outdoors long after the sun goes down. Just as with indoor lighting, different types of lighting, placed in different areas is the best way to go. Sconces and soft lighting around the deck can add a romantic and relaxing ambiance.   Add lighting that is a little brighter to areas where you may be grilling or places where you want to sit and enjoy a board game or a round of cards. Lighting around walkways, stairs and railings can also help with the safety of you and your guests. Lower watt, Solar and/or LED lighting are usually the best, as they prevent a lot of light pollution. Any of these lighting options can be accomplished in a variety of ways. One example of this is with Aurora Deck Lighting.

 2.  Spindles and Balusters

A beautiful way to makeover your deck is by adding spindles or balusters to the railing. These deck additions are attached to the bottom of the top railing and are secured into the floor of the deck. Metal balusters are very unique looking on wooden decks. Depending on what you want to spend, you can get Tuscan style balusters, which bow out a little bit, like you would see on the balcony of an Italian villa. If you prefer, spiral, straight or wavy iron or aluminum balusters, they are equally as eye-catching. Spindles are typically made out of wood and are less expensive than metal balusters. They can be straight, plain pieces of wood or cut a little fancier. Spindles can be stained to match your deck or use a lighter or darker stain for contrast. Here’s a unique product to consider.

 3. Lattice Work

Lattice work is a great way to give some style and privacy to your deck. Lattice has many uses, as far as your deck is concerned. Use lattice around your deck where spindles or balusters would go. This can assist in keeping things from blowing off your deck on a windy day or giving you the ability to leave your pet enclosed in the deck area. If your deck is close to a neighbor’s yard or to a street, large sheets of lattice can be attached to the sides and/or back of your deck to build a tall barrier. Lattice can be stained or painted for a bright or warm look. Ivy can even be grown on it, giving your deck more of a garden feel, all while achieving privacy. Lattice work is made of various types of wood such as; Cedar, Redwood and Pressure Treated lumber. They also come in a variety of lattice sizes from very small to very large.

4.  Railings

Railings are another simple way to update your deck. Putting simple railings around the perimeter can add extra places for guests to set their things. It also can give the deck more of the feeling of being an extension of your home. Railings for people to lean or hang on to, especially near steps is a good safety measure. Installing railings around your deck can also allow for the installation of balusters, spindles and lattice work later on. In fact, there are railings that allow you to have a completely unobstructed view of your property. This product is fairly new and is amazing if you desire the safety of protective railings but aren’t necessarily worried about privacy.

5. Overhead Covering

By adding some type of roof to your deck, you will be able to utilize it much more. Protecting your deck from the sun and rain, an overhead covering is a surefire way to make sure your outdoor time isn’t ruined by the weather. Overhead coverings made of wood or tin could have lights and perhaps even a ceiling fan wired into them, for added comfort. Also, the use of fabric or wooden pergolas can provide your deck with a bit of whimsy, while giving you respite from the hot sun.

Whether you want to add value to your home, make your backyard more beautiful or just want a place to get some fresh air and relax, a makeover for your deck will achieve all of that and more!
