Did you know that between the years 2003 and 2007, United States fire department responded to an average of 250 home fires per year that started with Christmas trees? Nearly half of these fires were caused by electrical problems (NFPA's "Home Christmas Tree and Holiday Light Fires" by John R. Hall, Jr. and Marty Aherns, October 2009). Although this may not seem like many fires caused by Christmas trees, the fact remains that when these fires do occur, the results can be fatal.

You may think that fires like this can only happen in your home, but they can happen just about anywhere. Anywhere you have Christmas lights or trees can be a hazard, including retail stores and office buildings. During the holidays it's very easy to get caught up in the holiday spirit, the shopping and all other winter activities that it's easy to forget common sense safety rules.
