India is the seventh largest country in terms of area and second in terms of population in the world. The Population in the country continues to be a serious concern from the past few decades, and the pace with which we are burgeoning has put immense pressure on the country’s resources.

The reason behind the rise in population is the inflow of people in these cities from small villages and towns, mainly in search for employment and better career opportunities. This has resulted in a massive shortage of living space, hygienic food and water, employment and various kinds of other resources.

The article is based on the findings and statistics of Census 2011 (which is carried out once in every 10 years), by the Ministry of Home Affairs (India) calculates the population of India.

10. Jaipur

Jaipur, the capital city of Rajasthan, is the most populated city of the state and the tenth most populated city of the country. Jaipur is named as the “Pink City”. The city is popular for its heritage hotels and royal palaces.

The city has seen a substantial amount of growth in the past few years. Mahindra group in collaboration with Rajasthan Government, have developed one of the largest IT SEZ in the country, that may generate large number of jobs, when fully operational.

9. Kolkata



Kolkata, the capital city of West Bengal has occupied 9th place in the list of Top 10 most Populated Cities in India. In terms of urban agglomeration, Kolkata is growing moderately.

8. Surat

Surat (previously Suryapur), the second most populous city of Gujarat, is known as the “city of flyovers”. It is one of the cleanest city in India and a cultural capital of Gujarat.

It is the home of some of the largest Indian multinationals like Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) and Wipro.

7. Pune

Pune, the second largest city of Maharashtra is known as the cultural capital of the state. It is another emerging IT city, after Bengaluru. With presence of various educational institutions and industries, the youth gets encouraged to settle in this city.

6. Ahmedabad

Ahmedabad, the most populated city in the state of Gujarat is ranked 6th in the list of Top 10 most Populated Cities in India. Traditionally known for trade and various businesses, it has one of the fastest growing economy.

As a result of this development, this mega city has attracted people from all around the country and led to a major increase in the city’s population. This in turn has resulted in traffic problems, sanitation, increment in slum population and hike in the property prices.

5. Chennai

Chennai, the capital city of Tamil Nadu, is the industrial capital of South India and a major economic and educational hub.

It is the home of some of the large multinationals, that generate large number of job opportunities. The city have a literacy rate of more than 90% and entails some of the most prestigious colleges of India, including: Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras), The Loyola College, and the Anna University.

4. Hyderabad

Hyderabad, a combined capital of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana state in South India, occupies the fourth position in our list of top 10 most populated cities in India.

The city has shown a tremendous growth in the past few decades, and emerged as a global center for Information Technology in India. This industrial growth has attracted a large number of migrants for employment, resulting in the tremendous increase in the city’s population.

3. Bengaluru

Bengaluru, the capital city of Karnataka also known as, “Silicon Valley of India” as it is the prime center for ‘information technology’ industry in the country.

Presence of Large multinationals and better educational institutions have attracted people from different parts of the country, to work or study over here. This has contributed to the substantial increase in the city’s population in the past few years.

With the large population, the traffic and a vehicular emission also got escalated and as a result Bangalore is reeling under the problem of air pollution too.

2. Delhi

Delhi, the capital of India, is the central hub and the second most populated city of the country. It is also the largest urban agglomeration in India by land area.

The rush of people to the capital in search of employment from the adjoining rural areas and towns has led to a rapid increase in the population, in the past few decades. This population rise has ultimately put immense pressure on the resources like land, water, power consumption and contributes towards air and water pollution.

1. Mumbai

Among all cities in India, Mumbai is the most populated city with more than 1.2 Cr people residing in this mega city. It is the most populated and the richest city in the country as well as one of the the most populous urban regions in the world.

Mumbai is the financial and entertainment epicenter of India and owing to this reason people from all around the country, come here in search for better career opportunities.

Rising population has resulted in the shortage of land area, hike in property prices, pollution, scarcity of water and power, and the enormous pressure on the city’s transport system.
