There is more glamour in today’s world than it could be found ever before. Everyone wants to look different and dress up in an elegant and adorable manner today. This is one reason why people spend more time in selecting their clothes and the brands they belong to. The most popular of these brands have taken the position of trend setters and have emerged as status symbols among the rich classes. However, different people feel differently about designer clothes. While some feel Armani is class, Valentino is beauty, Louis Vuitton is durability and Gucci is luxury, there are also people who would opt for alternatives that appear designer but do not carry a huge price tag with them. For people who are born with silver spoons in their mouth, the brand thing is the only way to go and most of them wear it because of the reputation associated with the name of the brand. While Dolce & Gabbana, Dior and Gucci still make sense to me as each piece is carefully and personally designed, there are brands which are making money for reasons I fail to understand. All popular designer brands are a bit overrated but some of them go over the top and become so annoying when they do not deliver as per their charge. Given below is a list of the top 10 most overrated clothing brands – brands that are good but not good enough for crying out their names so loud.

10. American Eagle Outfitters:

AE Outfitters is an American clothing retailer which is a favorite and much desired brand among teenagers. Though I personally prefer American Eagle to A&F and Hollister for some cute stuffs it offers but I don’t see the deal in paying so much for something that is not even high-end, preppy and stylish. Thankfully the designs are subtle and the Eagle logo doesn’t feature everywhere but that is no justification for so much hype which the AE brand brings along. After all, A&F, AE, Hollister, Aeropostale all appear the same, especially when every freaken kid in school is wearing them.

9. GAP:

The Gap, also known as Gap Inc. is again an American multinational retailer of clothing and accessories. It includes the five popular divisions – Old Navy, Banana Republic, Gap, Athleta and Piperlime. When The Gap was launched in 1969, it signified style and affordability. However today, the brand is far from stylish and preppy. Plus its plainand  apparel is simply overrated and overpriced. The brand which used to be excellent in the past is now just overdone. Still the initial buzz about Gap has kept it going.

8. True Religion:

True Religion is a California based clothing company which claims to sell premium handmade denim. The true religion brand jeans are the most expensive pair of jeans you will ever find, costing anywhere between 300$-600$. The clothing owes its high cost to fancy part production in America, but there is a large profit involved. No doubt the quality is much better than any ordinary jeans but the truth remains that nothing in the world can make a pair of jeans cost more than $75.

7. Polo Raulph Lauren:

Polo Raulph Lauren is a global multi-billion enterprise established by American fashion designer Raulph Lauren. Polo Raulph Lauren is particularly known for its high-end polo t-shirts, though they sell jeans, shirts, khakis and dress-up shirts too. Polo is overrated because of the premium status associated with it as the owner has always tried to target the high-end wealthy audience. Rich people are ready to pay five times higher for getting that much popular polo player stitched on their shirt. Moreover, high price of Polo does not mean use of rare and exotic fabric. Remember – you’re paying for the logo and not the fabric.

6. Ed Hardy:

Ed Hardy is an expensive and overrated designer clothing line belonging to American artist Don Ed Hardy. The brand is known for its tattoo prints, loud colors, logos of skulls, snakes and hearts and also sewn sequins which often indicate inclination to pop culture. Though the brand is not in its peak popularity as it was in 2006 and 2007, it is still far from dying soon. What upsets me is that the brand offers ridiculously low quality garments, that too, at a hideously jacked up price. The whole buzz about Ed hardy is due to the new wave of urban hipster fashion it upsurged in the past. Most people still wear it to look cool and rich but the low quality spoils it for the brand.

5. Jack Wills:

Jack Wills, founded in 1999, is a British clothing line aimed at rich high school and university students. Well, to me, Jack Wills (JW) is Britain’s reply to America’s Abercrombie & Fitch, only that it is more exclusive for the ones who can afford it. JW has a traditional British heritage associated with it as it is inspired by vintage sportswear. All the popular guys and girls of British high schools wear it as it is the epitome of British preppy cool. Though it appears no more well made than anything up on the high street, people still buy a £60 JW hoodie, either to pretend they’re rich or because they have little sense of spending money.

4. Lacoste:

Lacoste is a French company that sells high end designer clothing. The company has a green crocodile logo which appears on almost everything they sell. The quality is fine, infact better than Polo, but like all other designer brands, lacoste too is highly overrated. Lacoste is best known for its polo t-shirts but buying one means paying a hefty price. This is why wearing the crocodile is a status symbol (only if the on-looker can spot it). However, for me no t-shirt is worth more than 70$ (most lacoste items are priced above this). They are only meant to make you feel rich and serve no other purpose.

3. Hollister:

Hollister Co. is a company owned by Abercrombie and Fitch which sells out products like hoodies, t-shirts, polo shirts, jeans and other apparel targeting teens. Though Hollister is a bit cheaper compared to its parent A&F, the prices are still quite high for the boring stuff they sell. Tailoring to the surfer image, Hollister offers casual and laid back stuffs mostly sporting its obnoxious advertisement. The same quality of cloth can be acquired at Aeropostale for much cheaper rates. Every American mall has a Hollister store in it and the styles are so repetitive that anyone looking for preppy wear would be turned off. This is why I personally find Hollister to be very overrated.

2. Abercrombie & Fitch:

Abercrombie and Fitch is an over worn and overexposed clothing brand with almost every second American teen wearing it. The prices for most A&F clothes are ridiculously high, like $60-$100 for a casual t-shirt, which is just the same in quality as any t-shirt sold at an Old Navy store. Perhaps it is the most overpriced shop for mediocre clothing on the planet. Moreover, this brand has become so common that it has lost uniqueness and people who do not want to be clones just don’t buy it. However, this brand is still the most popular casual clothing brand with a section of people crazy about it. People like it, or they don’t, there is no middle thing when it comes to A&F.

1.Armani:

Armani is an international Italy based fashion house which manufactures products under the sub ranges Giorgio Armani, Armani Collezioni, Armani Jeans, Armani Exchange and Emporio Armani. The Armani suits have always been too overrated, given their prices and the other brands they compete with. Though the designs are classy, the brand has witnessed quality dilution with so many Armani labels existent now that offer different levels of quality. Thousands of people around the world perceive Armani as the ultimate designer brand without much knowledge of other better brands like Zegna which provide superior fabrics. Hence these people over the world are willing to shell out hundreds of dollars for a single Armani piece. This is why, here, we rate Armani as the top most overrated clothing brand across the world.
