First scale model of my booth

New Booth Setup

One of the tasks on my list for Smithsonian Craft Show prep is to figure out how I am going to set up my booth.

I’ve only done 2 previous booth shows and both times my booth was 8×15′ – this will be my first standard 10×10′ setup.

As I don’t have my booth at home, it now lives with an art shipping company, I can’t set it up and test layouts.  So the next best thing?

Making a scale model of the booth in cardboard.

And then fill it with scaled art:

Asking Questions

Another of the tasks on my prep list is to learn more about selling.  To that end I listened to the book To Sell is Human, by Daniel Pink.

One of my favorite tips in this most excellent book was that instead of a bunch of self inflating hype to pump myself up for a successful show, a more effective strategy is to ask myself questions.

So I wrote a list of questions and taped it to my wall and I read it every day as I prepare for the show.

One of my questions is “Can I set up a beautiful booth?”

The more I read this question the more I felt my model fell short.  It didn’t have full scale height walls and I felt I could do better with the layout.

(This is the point of the questions – it makes to reflect if you are really ready and to do what is needed to make it happen.)

Revisiting My Booth

So I got back out my cardboard tape and scissors and I made the model walls the correct height.

And I changed the layout, changed some of the art and now I feel like I have a solid plan for the set up.

There won’t be scissors in the real booth
