Tell us a little about yourself in 3 sentences….

I’m a 24-year-old from Melbourne, studying full-time, with a blog and Etsy shop on the  side. I love cats, rain, tea, old book smell, op shops, and cacti. I don’t like peas, dark chocolate, or seeing the movie before reading the book.

Why did you start your blog & Esty shop?

Of the two, I started my Etsy shop first, about a year after I started studying my PhD with the blog following shortly after. I had always loved doing crafty things in my spare time (handmade gift cards, sketching, and painting to name a few) but realised that I hadn’t done anything particularly creative in a long while. I wasn’t best pleased about that so I decided to look into different crafts and found polymer clay necklaces. I have a mild obsession with buttons and fabric so that’s where the earrings and hair pins came from.

I began toying with the idea of starting a blog not long after I’d opened the Etsy shop. I do a lot of writing for my uni course but it’s quite formal and serious. I wanted an outlet for more relaxed writing – somewhere I could put my opinions down, discuss something I’m passionate about, or document something I’ve done.

What inspires you to create?

I get my inspiration from anything and everything, really! For my Etsy shop, simply connecting and interacting with other creative types is great, and I often see colour combinations in the oddest of places. For my blog posts, I tend to be inspired by things I’m passionate about and trying or researching something new and different. I also find simply going outside to be one of the best sources of inspiration, for both the shop and blog. I’m often amazed at what I find, see, and think about when I take a walk! Creative inspiration is a weird and wonderful thing.

Name the book you always recommend to others and why?

“Cinderella Ate My Daughter” by Peggy Orenstein. It explores the way we socialise girls through the author’s first hand experiences of raising her young daughter. Orenstein highlights the many issues that plague our society and women and I think everyone should read it, regardless of whether they have children or not, because more people need to be aware of the intense and constantly reinforced pressures experienced by girls.

How has blogging impacted on your life?

Blogging has opened up so many doors for me. I had no idea what I was doing when I started so I quickly signed up for an e-course by the lovely Pip Lincolne. I’ve since taken two more of Pip’s e-courses and gained so many skills and friends along the way. There’s a really wonderful sense of community among bloggers that means a lot to me – people are so welcoming and supportive, which is great when you’re starting out! Meeting new people not only means you can connect with like-minded folks, but also with people who have different perspectives and opinions – and it’s all inspiring!

Name one place you would love to travel to but haven’t yet?

The Netherlands if we’re talking “big travel”. Closer to home? Tasmania, for sure.

What home-cooked meal always make you feel better when you have a bad day?

Mum’s egg and bacon pie!

Name one person who is an un-sung hero in your life/blogging world/business world who helps or supports you no matter what.

That would have to be my lovely boyfriend (though I feel it’s important to note that I do often sing about him. To his face. Which he doesn’t always appreciate. I’m pretty bad. Anyway). He is, without a doubt, the most supportive and encouraging person I know. There have been many times where I have come to him feeling pretty mopey and unmotivated about it all, and he never fails to pick me back up and remind me why I do what I do.

If you could have a superpower, what would it be and why?

I really just want to be able to knit. Can we make that happen please? Forget flying and reading people’s minds. To me, right now, knitting is a super power that I want to have.

Share a secret dream you have had for yourself and yet to achieve..(can be a serious thing or a funny one)

I would love to one day write a book about topics that are important to me – body image, sexual objectification, feminism – in an accessible way. I’d also really love to help change the way people engage with media and the world around them – I often think people are too passive and accepting and should be more active and critical in the way they approach things.
