Annie Mae Whisnant

Mrs. Annie Mae Whisnant, age 94, of 157 Lawing Street, Lincolnton died Saturday, December 26, 2015.

Her funeral will be noon Tuesday, December 29, 2015 at Boger City Baptist Church with Rev. Robert Redding, Rev. Bill Bingham and Rev. Steve Sigmon officiating. Burial will follow in Hollybrook Cemetery where she will be buried beside her husband, the late Larry Alexander Whisnant, the love of her life. The family will receive friends from 10:45 a.m. until 11:45 a.m. Tuesday prior to the service at Boger City Baptist Church.

Mrs. Whisnant was born on February 27, 1921 to the late Gaither and Della Setzer Kanipe. She was retired from Ethan Allan Furniture Company. Mrs. Whisnant had an unsurpassed wit and sense of humor and loved gatherings of friends and family. She leaves all who knew and loved her, with memories of her caring generous and beautiful spirit. The family would like to thank everyone who took care of her and all her friends who came by. They truly are “Guardian Angels”.

Mrs. Whisnant is survived by two daughters, Kathy Whisnant Sigmon and husband, Les of Conover and Phyllis Whisnant of Lincolnton; two sisters, Marie Kanipe of Conover and Inez Baird of Newton; three nieces, Becky Moorehouse of Seattle, WA, Vickie Turbeyville of San-Ramon, CA and Camilla Hewitt of Winston- Salem; two nephews Gary Kanipe of Newton and Rusty Baird of Newton.

Steve Brendle

VALE — Steve Brendle, age 88, of Carolina Care Center in Cherryville, and formerly of 7392 Reeps Grove Church Road in Vale, died on Thursday, December 24, 2015.

His funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, December 29, 2015, at Reeps Grove United Methodist Church with Rev. Travis Allshouse officiating. Burial will follow in the Reeps Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:30 p.m. until 2:45 p.m. prior to the service at the church.

Mr. Brendle was born October 26, 1927, in Lincoln County, to the late Grover Voyd and Zula Propst Brendle. He worked for Lincoln County D.O.T. He also worked for several car companies, to include Hoyle Motor of Lincolnton, Everette Chevy of Hickory, Modern Chrysler/Plymouth of Newton, Carswell Motors of Lincolnton, and Town Square Ford of Lincolnton, where he retired in 2007. He also served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict.

He is survived by his wife, Sue Powell Brendle of the home; a son, Rustin Powell Brendle of Vale; a daughter, Lynn Yount and husband Bruce of Vale; two sisters, Camilla Daniels of Winston-Salem, and Gladys Grose of Forest City; and two grandchildren, Alison Yount of Hickory and Emily Yount of Raleigh.

Edgar Parmer Smith

Edgar Parmer Smith, 84, of Newton passed away, Monday, December 21, 2015 at Abernethy Laurels in Newton.

Born March 8, 1931 in Lincoln County, he was the son of the late Ernest Lafone Smith and Pearl Wilson Smith.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Myrtle Janie Wright Smith; two sons, Edgar Donald Smith and Edgar Ronald Smith; and grandson, Richard Allen Benfield, Jr.

A member of Corinth Baptist Church in Vale, Edgar was the retired owner of Smith Trucking Company.

He is survived by two daughters: Kristine Smith Benfield and husband Richard of Newton and Renee Smith McIver and husband David of Colorado; daughters-in-law, Chin Su Smith of Vale and Sue Smith of Vale; sister, Betty Lee Murray of Newton; and nine grandchildren, Noah McIver, Angelina Smith, Donald Smith, Jr., Crystal D. Smith, Lee Barker, Kevin Barker, Joey Barker, Matt Barker, and Adam Barker.

The funeral service will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday, December 29, 2015 at Corinth Baptist Church in Vale with the Rev. William L. Kanupp officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends an hour prior to the service from 1:30 p.m. until 2:30 p.m. at the church.

Helen Friday Blackburn

Helen Friday Blackburn, age 87, of 2171 Gastonia Highway in Lincolnton, died on Thursday, December 24, 2015.

Her funeral service was held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, December 27, 2015 at Riverview Baptist Church with Rev. Ricky Brown and Scott Whitesides officiating. The body was placed in state for 30 minutes prior to the service at the church. Burial followed in the church cemetery. The family received friends from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Saturday, December 26, 2015 at Warlick Funeral Home.

Mrs. Blackburn was born December 22, 1928, in Gaston County, to the late Ernest William and Grace Huggins Friday. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband Robert Gene Blackburn, and a sister Frances Rhyne. She worked in textiles. Mrs. Blackburn was a longtime member of Riverview Baptist Church.

She is survived by a daughter, Donna Blackburn of the home; a sister, Judith Friday of Lincolnton; a brother, Barry Ernest Friday and wife Sharon of Stanley; numerous nieces and nephews; and her grand-cat, Zipper.

Virginia Cothran Myers

Virginia Cothran Myers, age 78, of 611 Jerry Crump Road in Lincolnton, died on Thursday, December 24, 2015.

Her funeral service was held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, December 27, 2015, in the Warlick Funeral Home Chapel. Burial followed in Hollybrook Cemetery. The family received friends from 2 p.m. until 2:45 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.

Mrs. Myers was born June 30, 1937, in Clinton, S.C., to the late Luke and Mamie Marie Carnell Cothran. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband John Monroe Myers, and three sisters. She worked as a seamstress.

She is survived by a son, John Myers, Jr. and wife Barbara of Lincolnton; a daughter, Marie Price of Lincolnton; a son, Steven Myers, Sr. and wife Freda of Cherryville; a sister, Dot Crider of Falls Church, Va.; twelve grandchildren; and fourteen great-grandchildren.

Robert ‘Bob’ Lee Graham, III

Robert “Bob” Lee Graham, III, 94, passed away Tuesday December 22, 2015 at Grace Ridge in Morganton.

Mr. Gra­ham was born in Enoree, S.C. on August 31, 1921 to Robert Lee Graham II and Eliza­beth Agnes Snyder Gra­ham. He graduated from Greenville High School in 1938 and went on to com­plete a degree in electrical engineering at Clemson A&M College in 1942. Pri­or to graduation he earned a single engine pilot license and was among the first 100,000 licensed aviators in the U.S. Upon gradua­tion he was commissioned as an ensign in the United States Naval Reserve. His navy duty stations were stateside and in the Pa­cific Theater. While living in Charlotte he met Lois Parker who became his wife on October 5, 1946. He was a member of the Holy Name Society of the Catholic Church, treasurer for St. Dorothy’s Council in Lincolnton, and an hon­orary life member of both the 3rd and 4th degree in the Knights of Columbus. His hobbies were flying, fishing and genealogy. He has been a member of the American Institute of Elec­trical Engineers, American Society of Mechanical En­gineers, American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning En­gineers, Newcomers Club of Moline Illinois, Ameri­can Legion, Aircraft Own­ers and Pilots Association, and the North Carolina As­sociation of Nurserymen. He volunteered with many Lincoln County organiza­tions including the literacy council, historical com­mission, and library. Mr. Graham also wrote histori­cal articles for the Lincoln Times News and genea­logical societies, taught genealogy at Gaston Col­lege, and gave talks about the Revolutionary War. At the age of 83 he finally re­tired and moved to Grace Ridge in Morganton. To­gether with his wife they published a book of family history on the Parkers of western North Carolina.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Lois Parker Graham and one son, Robert Lee Graham, IV.

Survivors include his children, Richard Graham and his wife Sally, Eliza­beth L. Smith and her hus­band Sheldon, and Nancy W. Graham and her hus­band David Brown. Mr. Graham also left behind grandchildren, Erik O. Smith, Robert J. Graham and wife Yvonne as well as their daughters, Lisa and Vanessa, Tracy Lee Smith, and Alison Lea Graham.

A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Dorothy’s Cath­olic Church in Lincolnton on Wednesday, December 30, 2015 at 10 a.m. with Father David Miller of­ficiating. Burial will be at Bethlehem United Meth­odist Church Cemetery in Cherryville with mili­tary honors provided by the Cherryville American Legion Honor Guard. A reception will follow the graveside service in the fellowship hall.

Timothy Perry Houser, age 54, of 194 McGee Road in Lincolnton, died on Monday, December 21, 2015.

A memorial service is planned for a later date.

Mr. Houser was born February 11, 1961, in Gaston County, to the late Jimmy Finton and Nancy Sue Kimmer Houser.

He is survived by one son, Matthew Houser of Vale; one brother, Randy Houser of Lincolnton; two sisters, Vickie Greene of Kings Mountain and Sheila Early of Lincolnton; one grandson, Jaxson Houser.
