Muriel Hull

Muriel Lean Workman Hull, of 1385 Peeler Road, Vale, passed away Thursday, April 16, 2015 at Cardinal Healthcare in Lincolnton.

Born September 28, 1941, she was the daughter of the late J.E. “Boge” Workman and Mary Lou Short Workman. She was retired from Drexel Heritage where she was a supervisor and also worked for Maryvale Daycare in Vale and was a lifetime member of Mull’s Chapel Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Warren Ray Hull; grandson, Donnie Ray Vernon and infant twin siblings.

She is survived by her son, Michael Hull and wife Trisha of Arden; two daughters, Marilyn and husband, Walter Godfrey of Cherryville, Tammie and husband, Mitch Carver of Mt. Holly; five brothers, Loyd and Jane Workman of Vale, Guy and Joyce Workman of Vale, Ronnie and Sherry Workman of Lincolnton, Billy and Karen Workman of Vale, David and Libby Workman of Vale; six sisters, Geneva and Carrol Towery of Vale, Dorothy and Richard Bright of Swansboro, Joan and Bobby Chapman of Morganton, Darnell and Warren Carswell of Morganton, Kathy Martin and Jim of Swansboro, Janice and Dennis Houser of Vale; three grandchildren, Shane Godfrey, Jeffrey Hull, Bradley Hull; six great grandchildren, Jadon Vernon, Cadon Hull, Brennan Godfrey, Makayla Godfrey, Dawson Hull and Jacob Hull.

Visitation was held from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m., Saturday, April 18, 2015 at Mull’s Chapel Baptist Church. A funeral service was held at 11 a.m., Saturday, at Mull’s Chapel Baptist Church. Rev. Shane Ramsey, Rev. Bruce Piercy and Rev. Jeffrey Hull officiated. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Elizabeth ‘Libby’ Beam Lawing

Libby Lawing, 86, of Lincolnton died Saturday, April 18, 2015 in Winston-Salem.  Libby was born in Lincolnton on December 8, 1928 to Clyde and Lula Beam.  She was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Dr. Karl Lander Lawing and her sister Margaret Jones of Wellesley, Mass.

Libby graduated from Winthrop College and received her MFA from Columbia University where she studied under renowned pianist Dr. Edwin Hughes.   She taught piano for 64 years and was a member of the National Federation of Music Clubs presiding as a Festival judge for over 40 years.  She was a lifelong member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church where she chaired and served on numerous committees.  Libby was active in her community and performed frequently in community concerts and events.

Libby is survived by her children John (Jill) Lawing of Manteo, Libby Shelton (Ron McKenzie) of Winston-Salem, Karl Lawing and Deborah of Lincolnton, and Robert (Jeri) Lawing of Charleston, SC.  She is also survived by her grandchildren Betsy Shelton, Katie Lawing Manthey, Robert Shelton, Hannah Lawing, Margaret Lawing, Rebecca Lawing and her sister Kitty Bowles of Winston-Salem.

Services will be held Tuesday, April 21, 2015 at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Lincolnton.  The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until 1:45 p.m. in the North Edition of Emmanuel.  The funeral service will follow at 2 p.m. in the sanctuary with interment at Hollybrook.

Robert Cooke

VALE – Robert Hamilton Cooke, 86, of 188 Howard Lingerfelt Road, Vale, passed away Saturday, April 18, 2015 at Autumn Care of Drexel in Drexel.

He was born in Burke County on January 4, 1929, to the late Aaron David Cook and Junie Francis Chapman Cook. He was retired from the furniture industry and was a member of Hebron United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Men. Mr. Cook and his wife also fostered children for forty-five years and cared for twenty-six children.

In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by his wife Sallie Pauline Lingerfelt Cook; son, Robert “Robbie” Lewis Hollifield; two brothers, J.C. Cook and D.B. Cook; and two sisters, Joann Abee and Ruth Keller.

His is survived by his two daughters, Debra “Debbie” Lee Putnam and husband Randy of Vale and Dorothy Cook of Connelly Springs; two foster children, Timothy “Tim” Ledford of Vale and Elizabeth Gail Pritchard and husband Mark of Vale; daughter-in-law, Mickie Hollifield of Morganton; sister, Catherine Cook and husband Dean of Valdese; fifteen grandchildren and sixteen great grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. today at Stamey-Tysinger Funeral Home & Cremation Center, Fallston. At other times the family will be at the home of Debbie and Randy Putnam, 365 Howard Lingerfelt Road, Vale, NC. Condolences may be made online at www.stameytysingerfuneralhome.com.

Bernice Bumgarner Hager

ALEXIS – Bernice Bumgarner Hager, 92, passed away on Friday, April 17, 2015. She was born in Lincoln County, daughter of the late A.T. and Annie Mae Wingate Bumgarner. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Willis Franklin Hager; a daughter, Linda Hager Hannifin; a son, Bob Hager; and two sisters, Madelin Bumgarner and Mary Stroupe. She was a member of Alexis Baptist Church. She loved to cook and enjoyed her family.

She is survived by a daughter, Ann Hager Harrill of Lincolnton; five grandchildren, Patrick Hannifin, Brian Hannifin, Leslie Hannifin, Lori Harrill Simpson and Mary Harrill Cagle; and ten great-grandchildren.

The family would like to thank Hospice & Palliative Care of Lincoln County, the staff of Lincolnton Rehabilitation Center, Dr. David Thomas and Dr. Charles Reid for their care of and compassion for Mrs. Hager.

A service to celebrate the life of Mrs. Hager will be held at 3 p.m. today at Alexis Baptist Church with Dr. Sandy Marks officiating. The family will receive friends today from 1:30 p.m. until 3 p.m. at the church.

Richard ‘Rick’ Edward Jones

NEWTON — Richard “Rick” Edward Jones, age 67, of Golden Cedar Lane in Newton, and formerly of Lincolnton, died on Thursday, April 16, 2015.

His funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. today, April 20, 2015 at McKendree United Methodist Church with Pastor Gregg Plott and Rev. Deval Mason officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12:30 p.m. until 1:45 p.m. in the fellowship hall.

Mr. Jones was born February 21, 1948, in Warren County, NJ to the late Charles L. and Anna Mills Jones. He worked as a welder.

He is survived by his wife, Fae Lane Jones of the home; a son, Brian Jones and wife Lisa of Catawba; a daughter, Kerrie Thomas and husband Tony of Maiden; a brother, Charles Jones of Lincolnton; three sisters, Rebecca Parsons, Betty Bumgartner, and Carol Heisler, all of Pennsylvania; and five grandchildren, Brandon Jones, Kendall Jones, Shawn Jones, Tyler Thomas, and Aidan Thomas.
