Dorris Florence Moger Hoyle

Dorris Florence Moger Hoyle, age 91, of 1333 Nature Preserve Trail in Denver, passed away on Saturday, March 21, 2015.

Her funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, March 25, 2015, in the Warlick Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Tim Killian officiating. Burial will follow in Hollybrook Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 24, 2015, at Warlick Funeral Home.

Born April 14, 1923, in Valhalla, N.Y., met her husband of 55 years, Marcus Hal Hoyle, Jr. when he was stationed with the U.S. Navy in New York harbor. After the war they moved to Lincolnton.

Dorris enjoyed working in flower and vegetable gardens, sewing and cooking. She loved all the beauties of nature and animals, especially the sheep they raised. Dorris was active for many years in the Democrat party and Girl Scouting. She volunteered for the Blood Mobile, Christian Ministries, Meals on Wheels, Community Based Alternatives Board, and served on the State Board of Education for Exceptional Children. One of her favorite volunteer activities was working with the N.C. Guardian ad Litem program. For many years, she was a member of Lincolnton’s First United Methodist Church and later Denver United Methodist Church, ELBA, and the Denver Arts Council.

With her many friends Dorris enjoyed bridge, book club, dinner club, church circle meetings, and entertaining at home.

In addition to her interest in genealogy, she loved traveling, boating on Lake Norman, and going to her mountain condo. Her favorite mountain memories included Art in the Park weekends in Blowing Rock and visits to the Crossnore School, “Mountains of Hope for Children in Need.”

In 1998 Dorris was able to fulfill a long time dream of sending her grandchildren on a European tour.

Dorris was preceded in death by son Marcus Hal Hoyle, III, and husband Marcus Hal Hoyle, Jr.

She is survived by a son, Warren and wife Donna, their children Jason, Jeff, and Shelley Miller and their families; daughter Miriam Cline and husband Don, their daughters Jamie Sidler and Heather McGhee and their families; son Wayne and wife Lisa, their children Adam and Katie; ten great-grandchildren; brother Harvey Moger and wife Carol, their four sons and their families.

Memorials may be made to the charity of one’s choice, to the Crossnore School, Inc., 100 DAR Drive, Crossnore, NC 28616, or to Catawba Regional Hospice, Sherrills Ford Unit, 3975 Robinson Road, Newton, NC 28658.

Clyde Franklin Ledford, Sr.

Clyde Franklin Ledford, Sr., age 81, of 1934 W. Highway 150 in Lincolnton, died on Saturday, March 21, 2015.

His funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, March 24, 2015, in the Warlick Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Jerry Lail officiating. Burial will follow in the Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until 1:45 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.

Mr. Ledford was born November 23, 1933, in Lincoln County, to the late Russell Carl and Ethel Short Ledford. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by a brother, James Ledford. He worked in construction and in his spare time enjoyed fox and rabbit hunting, camping, and was a volunteer firefighter for the Crouse Fire Department.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret JoAnn Sain Ledford of the home; two sons, Clyde Ledford, Jr. and wife Linda, and Tim Ledford, all of Lincolnton; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

Dr. Clyde Thomas Smith

Dr. Clyde Thomas Smith, age 72, of Lincolnton, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, March 20, 2015.

A Celebration of his Life Service will be held at 2 p.m. today, at Covenant Bible Church with Rev. Mike Devine officiating.  His body will lie in state for 30 minutes prior to the service at the church.  Burial will follow in the Cox Family Cemetery. The family received friends from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m. on Sunday, March 22, 2015 at Warlick Funeral Home.

Dr. Smith was born May 11, 1942, in Gaston County, to the late John Price and Nell Mullis Smith.  In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a brother, William Price Smith.

Dr. Smith was retired after 33 years in Public Education, 30 of which were with Lincoln County Schools.   He served as a teacher, coach, assistant principal and principal at Lincolnton High School, Oaklawn Elementary and Iron Station Elementary.  He was Headmaster at Lincoln Christian Academy for nine years.  Dr. Smith was an Adjunct Professor at Gardner Webb University – Graduate School of Education, and at Gaston College.  His community involvement consisted of President of Lincolnton High School Sports Boosters, Habitat for Humanity, and Gideon’s.  He served as General Chairman and Director for several county wide religious crusades as well as a Deacon, and was on various committees with his church.

Dr. Smith received a BS in Education from Western Carolina University, an MA and EDS from Appalachian State University.  He received his Doctorate in Education from Nova Southeastern University and was in the Principal’s Executive Program at the University of North Carolina.

Highlights of his career include being a Presenter at International Reading Conference in Toronto, Canada, and a Presenter at International Conference in Stockholm, Sweden – Uppsala University.  He was also chosen as an ACSI Team Member, one of 40 Educators chosen to visit schools in Australia and New Zealand and submit a report to the U.S. Congressional Committee on Education.

He is survived by his wife and retired Kindergarten Teacher, Linda Cox Smith; three sons, Tom Smith and wife Kathy of Tenn., Tim Smith and wife Melissa of Lincolnton and Grayson Smith and special friend Wendy Starnes of Lincolnton; one brother, Harold Smith of Stanley; one sister, Shirley Rankin of McAndenville; five grandchildren, Emily, Anna, Sydney, Camden and Olivia Smith.

Sarah Jane Hoyle Crosby

VALE – Mrs. Sarah Jane Hoyle Crosby, age 79, of Beam Lumber Road in Vale, died on Friday, March 20, 2015.

Her funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. today at Reepsville Baptist Church with Rev. Jeff Hull and Roger Self officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family received friends from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Sunday, March 22, 2015 at Warlick Funeral Home.

Mrs. Crosby was born June 18, 1935, in Gaston County, to the late Garman Ess and Rose Lee Poteat Hoyle. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, Thomas Hoyle and one sister, Kathleen Dameron. Mrs. Crosby worked in the cafeteria with the Gaston County School System.

Survivors include her husband of 60 years, Howard Lee Crosby of the home, one brother, Allen Hoyle of Bessemer City; one son, Lee Crosby of Cherryville; two daughters, Roxanne Crosby Farmsworth of Vale and Dianne Crosby Self of Dallas; seven grandchildren, Christy Low, Kelly Low, Steven Lackey, Taylor Self, Katelyn Self, Jason Self and Josh Self; nine great-grandchildren, Alex Bowman, Savannah Bowman, Nathaniel Lackey, Mitchell Lackey, Ethan Low, Amber Low, Kennedy Torres, Kyndal and Kaleb Self.

Nancy Elliott Freeman

Mrs. Nancy Elliott Freeman, age 85, of 312 Terrace Place, Lincolnton died Saturday, March 21, 2015.

Her funeral will be 3 p.m. Tuesday, March 24, 2015 at the First Presbyterian Church in Lincolnton.  Burial will follow in Hollybrook Cemetery.  The family will receive friends from 2 p.m. until 2:45 p.m. Tuesday in the sanctuary of First Presbyterian Church.

Mrs. Freeman was born on July 9, 1929 and was the daughter of the late John Elliott and Katherine Elliott Sides.  She was also preceded in death by her grandsons, Christopher and Cameron Hallman.  Mrs. Freeman retired from the Lincoln County Department of Social Services as a social worker.

She is survived by her husband, Ralph “R.T.”  Freeman of the home; two daughters, Ann Freeman Hallman and husband, Randy, of  Lincolnton, Ellen Freeman Maddox and husband, Scott of Salisbury; two grandchildren, Ashley M. Knowles and husband, Aaron of Abaco, Bahamas and Ryne Maddox of Raleigh; one great-grandson, Kaiden Knowles.

Danny Willis

Dan “Danny” Lee Willis, 67, of Vale, passed away Friday, March 20, 2015 at Grace Heights in Morganton.

Born October 26, 1947 in Lincoln County, he was the son of Ruth Johnson Willis and the late Hubert D. “Joe” Willis. He was known as “Produce King” and was a lifelong member of Hull’s Grove Baptist Church. He loved spending time with family and friends and was an avid NASCAR fan.

In addition to his mother he is survived by a daughter, Danielle Gideon of Vale; grandson, Brett Gideon; brother and sister-in-law, Dale and Pat Willis of Morganton; sister, Judy Willis of Morganton; nephews, Dennis Willis and wife, Angela of Morganton, Ronnie Willis and wife, Betty of Morganton; special nieces and nephews, Heather and Seth Burns, Landon Willis, Ashley and Amanda Willis.

The family extends a special appreciation to Grace Heights and their staff for all of their outstanding care for Danny and our family.

Visitation was held from 1:30 p.m. until 3 p.m. Sunday at Hull’s Grove Baptist Church. The funeral service was held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Hull’s Grove Baptist Church with Rev. Marcus Redding officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Dennis Franklin Kuck

CORNELIUS — Dennis Franklin Kuck of Cornelius, and formerly of Lincolnton, passed away March 19, 2015.

His funeral service was held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, March 22, 2015, at First United Methodist Church with Rev. David Wyant and Rev. Steve Audrey officiating. Burial followed in Hollybrook Cemetery. The family received friends from 1 p.m. until 2:15 p.m. prior to the service at Warlick Funeral Home.

Dennis was born October 14, 1947. A graduate of Lincolnton High School’s Class of 1965, he graduated from the University of Charlotte with a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration. He joined the US Army on March 16, 1970, before being honorably discharged on November 30, 1971. A Bronze Star decorated veteran, he completed his tour of Vietnam in 1970.

He enjoyed an outstanding career in International Business, living overseas for a number of years. He finished his professional career by founding his own company Lincoln Tool Co.

Dennis is survived by his wife, Sharon Kuck; his mother, Lavinia Burris Kuck; a sister, Dorea Kuck Drum; brother-in-law, Tommy Dale Drum; a nephew, Jon Drum all of Sherrills Ford; a niece, Laura Drum Wopperer and three great-nieces all of Cornelius. He was preceded in death by his father Frank Gamble Kuck and his brother David C. Kuck.
