Betty Little Howard
Mrs. Betty Little Howard, 86, of Denver died February 18, 2015 at her residence. Born November 28, 1928 in Lincoln County she was a daughter of the late Durant Hartsell Little and Florence Howard Little. She was a lifelong member of Fairfield United Methodist Church where she sang in the choir and attended Salem United Methodist Church in later years. She was employed with Burlington, Cascade Division early in her career and retired from R.H. Bouligny after 30 years of service. She also enjoyed singing in the Gospelaires.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Saturday, February 21, 2015 in the Chapel of Raymer-Kepner Funeral Home with Rev. Tim Killian officiating. Burial will follow at Fairfield United Methodist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 12:30 p.m. until 2 p.m. at the funeral home.

She leaves to cherish her memory her son, Harold Howard, Jr and wife Shelia; daughter, Marilyn Loftin and husband Toney; sister, Frances Brotherton of the Huntersville Oaks; special niece and friend, B.J. Caldwell; grandchildren, Wesley Howard and wife Micki, Randy Howard and wife Katie, Jeffrey Loftin and wife Laura, Phillip and Alex Loftin; great grandchildren, Lauren, Landon, Evan and Paisley Howard, Blake and Lucas Loftin; brother-in-law, Billy H. Howard and wife Joyce of Lowesville and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Howard, Sr. and brother, Alexander Little.

Rev. Albert Alba Young
The Rev. Albert Alba Young, 97, of Hickory, passed away February 17, 2015 at his residence.

Born June 13, 1917 in Mitchell County, he was the son of the late John Dosser Young and Hattie McNeil Young.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his devoted wife of 72 years, Arzilla G. Young; brothers, Claude Young, Audie Young, Jay Young, Velmer Young, Bobby Young; sisters, Georgie Metcalf, Bonnie Burleson, Pearl Morgan, Mae Thomas, Jennie Reese; and grandson-in-law, Elliott Wilson Teague.

Rev. Young is survived by his son, Charles R. Young, Sr. and wife Elaine of Hickory; daughter, Rebecca Y. Abernethy and husband Steve of Lincolnton; granddaughters, Allyson A. Hancock and husband Doug of Lincolnton, Stephanie A. Teague of Lincolnton, Heather Y. Hancock and husband Peter of Hickory; grandsons, The Rev. Dr. Bruce Albert “Bert” Young and wife Tiffany of Bladenboro, Charles Roger Young, Jr. and wife Meghan of Hickory; great-grandchildren, Trip, Deke, J.B. and Cece Young of Hickory, Lily Kate, Gwyneth, Ainsley Young of Bladenboro, Harper and Hollis Hancock of Hickory, Wade and Will Hancock of Lincolnton, and Carys and Dawser Teague of Lincolnton.

Rev. Young graduated from Alexander High School, Mars Hill College and Furman University. He had seminary training at Southern and Southeastern Seminaries, Department of the School of Pastoral Care of Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, as well as frequent summer studies.

He became a Christian in the spring of 1935 and was ordained to the Ministry, March 24, 1940 at Clinchfield Baptist Church, Marion by the late Dr. W.R. Grigg. His pastorates include student pastorates at Mars Hill, Furman and Oaklawn Baptist Church, Winston-Salem from 1948-1951.

He came to Viewmont Baptist Church in Hickory on December 17, 1951, retiring on July 31, 1978. During this tenure of 26½ years, the church experienced dramatic growth in all aspects of its ministry and Rev. Young emerged as a leader in local, state, and national Baptist organizations. His mission work took him to Europe, the Holy Land, Asia, Alaska, Jamaica as well as many locations across America.

After his retirement he served ten congregations as an interim pastor. The Rev. Albert Young had a meaningful and spiritual influence in many people’s lives and loved being a part of their special moments. In his own words he wrote: “I have been born again. I love to preach, pastor, visit, counsel and I hope to be useful as long as I have life.” And he was…

A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, February 22, 2015 at Viewmont Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Jay Robison and the Rev. Dr. Bert Young officiating. Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:30 p.m. until 2:45 p.m. Sunday prior to the funeral service in the gathering area of the church. Deacons of Viewmont Baptist Church are asked to serve as Honorary Pallbearers.

Glenda Kiser Lynch, 63, of Lincolnton, entered into her eternal rest on Wednesday, February 18, 2015, surrounded by her family and friends.

Her funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, February 21, 2015, at Daystar Church of God with Pastor Joey Williams officiating. Burial will follow in the Lynch Family Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. this evening, February 20, 2015, at Warlick Funeral Home.

Glenda was born March 23, 1951 in Gaston County, to the late Glenn and Peg Carpenter Kiser. She was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother and was loved by everyone. Glenda worked at Cochrane and Hooker Furniture, and then retired from her job as a teacher at Boger City United Methodist Preschool Mother’s Morning Out.

She is survived by her husband of 44 years, Jerry Lynch of the home; three daughters, Tracy Schronce and husband Robbie, Leigh Hooper and husband Joe, and Ashley Jones and husband John, all of Lincolnton; one brother, Jerry Kiser of Gastonia; one sister, Kay Mosteller of Lincolnton; sister-in-law, Terry Lynch of Lincolnton; eight grandchildren, Taylor Schronce, Harley Schronce, Heather Schronce, Lane Hooper, Melanie Jones, Meredith Jones, Sierra Jones, and Abbigail Jones; a special granddaughter, Samantha Russell; special friends, Susan Burrows and Gail Shull; and a number of nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Evelyn Yates ‘Nana’ Gregory
Evelyn Yates “Nana” Gregory, age 87, of Denver went home to be with her Heavenly Father on February 17, 2015 after precious moments of time surrounded by her entire treasured family.

Born in Durham County in 1927, she was the daughter of the late Matthew Titus and Minnie Ruth Yates. In addition to her parents, Evelyn was preceded in death by her husband of 43 years, Coy Woodrow Gregory of Durham.

Survivors include three children, Kelly Gregory Snyder, Kenneth McCoy (Misty) Gregory, Jennie (David) Goforth; seven grandchildren, Chance (Lindsey) Gregory, Tiffany (Rich Salmons) Gregory, Stephanie (Brandon) Tyson, Ashleigh (Erich) Cloninger, McCoy (Haley) Goforth, Leah (John Desern,III) Snyder, Yates Gregory Snyder along with eight great grandchildren; Kaitlyn Gregory, Avrey Tyson, Adelyn Tyson, Norah Cloninger, Jake Desern, Liam Salmons and soon to welcome Tatum Gregory and Hawkins Goforth. Survivors also include sister, Carolyn (Belton) Atkinson and brother, Harold (Patsy) Yates both of Durham.

Upon retiring as bank manager of Bank of America, Evelyn enjoyed several years of walks on the beach, gathering seashells, family visits, fishing off of the pier at Apache Campground in North Myrtle Beach, S.C. and travel. At the age of 70, Evelyn “earned her wings” in her pursuit as a flight attendant with Mesa Airlines and was affectionately referred to as “Nana”. She has been noted in various means of media as a woman of adventure and determination in What’s Next, Defying Gravity, Womans’ Day, USA Today, AARP Magazine, Associated Press, Paul Harvey, Aviation Careers Magazine and various local newspapers. As aging would allow, Evelyn remained actively involved in the ministries of Westport Baptist Church and continued to share the gospel of Christ. Among various roles in the community, she also served as an advocate for the elderly as a participant of the Adult Care Home Community Advisory Committee. Above all she was an exceptional mother, grandmother and “Nana” to all that she encountered. Evelyn Gregory excelled and took great pride in ministering to the needs of individuals near and far.

A receiving of friends will be held today, February 20, 2015, at Westport Baptist Church from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m. Interment will be at Maplewood Cemetery in Durham at a later date to be determined.

CHERRYVILLE — Mr. Kenneth Ray Brittain, 73, of 2089 Eaker Dr., passed away on Wednesday, February 18, 2015 at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.

Kenneth was born in Gaston County on December 25, 1941 a son of the late Carmie F. Brittain, Sr. and Maude Costner Brittain. He was retired as an upholsterer from Bradington Young in Cherryville and was a member of Plainsview Baptist Church in Lawndale.

Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Margaret Faye Wells Brittain of the home; a son, Darren Wells Brittain and wife Crystal; two daughters, Denise Brittain Walker and husband Scott and Pamela Roxann Lucas all of Cherryville; two grandchildren, Stephanie Lucas and Dustin Lucas; four brothers, Earl Brittain, Allen Brittain and Carmie “C.F.” Brittain, Jr. all of Cherryville and John Wayne Brittain of Lansing; one sister, Ruth Rudisill of Cherryville.

Visitation will be today February 20, 2015 from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Stamey-Cherryville Funeral Home & Cremation Service and at other times the family will be at the home. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, February 21, 2015 at 3 p.m. at Plainsview Baptist Church with Dr. Ernest Speagle officiating. Eva Mae Brown Sherrill, 95, passed into the loving arms of our Lord on February 17, 2015 at CMC Lincoln with family and friends by her side.

Eva was born on June 10, 1919 in McAdenville to Edmund “Ed” Brown and Emma Price. She was a member of Macedonia Baptist Church in Pumpkin Center.

Eva is survived by her two sons, James Sherrill Jr. and Russell Sherrill; four daughters, Nancy Spenser, Brenda Goodman, Caroleen Barnette, and Delores Poole; nineteen grandchildren, Deborah Johnson, Lisa Barron, Darlene Heafner, Tina Powell, Robert Thompson II, Rebecca Keeler, James Sherrill III, Loretta Pope, Billy Varner, Donna Wyatt, Ronnie Varner, Kevin Varner, Michael Varner, Terry Varner, Melissa Snyder, Teresa Garza, Matthew Barnette, Garrett Barnette, and Angela Bollinger, 40 great-grandchildren and 25 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James Sherrill, Sr., daughters, Betty Thompson and Roxanne Sherrill; grandson, Jason Barnette; brothers, Adam Brown and Monroe Brown; sister, Johnsie Brown Arrowood.

Eva was a loving, kindhearted, charitable, amazing woman who loved her Lord and her family with all that was within her. She will be remembered with great affection and joy. Her passing has left a hole in our hearts that may never heal.

CHERRYVILLE — Peggy Jean Carpenter Beam, age 79, of Weaver Street in Cherryville, died February 17, 2015 at her residence. Peggy was born in Gaston County on November 28, 1935 a daughter of the late Fred and Edna Huss Carpenter. She was retired from Beam’s Rest Home, former owner of Go In Style Beauty Salon and a member of First Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Chranson Beam; three sisters, Pat Parker Mauney, Jo Owens and Linda Mauney and a brother, Jack Carpenter.

Survivors include a daughter, Dawn Mauney and husband Mark of Cherryville; a son, C. Todd Beam and wife Lonnia of Cherryville; three grandchildren, Matthew Beam and wife Kathryn of Kannapolis, Joshua Mauney and Drew Mauney both of Cherryville; a brother, Jerry “Buck” Carpenter of Cherryville, and numerous nieces and nephews..
