James Duke Peeler
James Duke Peeler, 90, died January 28, 2015, at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.

His funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, February 1, 2015, at Emmanuel Lutheran Church with Pastor Michael Collins officiating. Burial will follow in Hollybrook Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until 2:30 p.m. on Sunday in the North Wing of the church.

Jim was born January 5, 1925, in Cleveland County, to the late George Murphy and Lila Houser Peeler, and grew up in the North Brook section of Lincoln county. In addition to his parents, Mr. Peeler was predeceased by his wife, Helen Wise Peeler, and a brother, Hubert Peeler.

He attended Wingate College before entering the U.S. Navy Air Corps in 1943 serving in the Atlantic and Pacific during World War II. After returning home he attended Lenoir Rhyne College and the University of Maryland. Returning to Lincolnton, he went into partnership with his father and brother-in-law, Robert G. and Bob Wise in Wise Implement Company. He was a member of Emanuel Lutheran Church and a Mason. In 1967 he became a Real Estate Broker and from 1968-1991 he served as the Executive Director of Lincolnton Housing Authority.

He is survived by a son, Alan Duke Peeler and wife Myrl of Lincolnton; a daughter, Donna Peeler Strong and husband Murray of Atlanta, Ga.; a sister, Barbara Cherry Robbins and her husband Dick of Lincolnton; brother-in-law, Dr. John E. Wise of Hickory; sister-in-laws Carol Peeler and Dot Wise of Lincolnton; and one granddaughter, Katie Strong.

Bessie Lee Benfield Rudisill
Bessie Lee Benfield Rudisill, 95, died January 29, 2015 at the Stanley Total Living Center. She was born in Lincoln County, daughter of the late J.B. and Florence Perkins Benfield, she was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, John Calvin Rudisill; brother, Joe Benfield and two sisters, Latt Link and Bertha Reel. She was a longtime member of Christ’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Stanley. She and her husband were former owners of Rudisill Dry Cleaners in Stanley. She was proud of her three sons and their schools, Lenoir Rhyne, UNC, and NC State. She loved planting flowers in her yard.

Survivors include three sons, Rod Rudisill and wife Jackie of McAdenville, John Rudisill, Jr. and wife Ginger of Stanley, Ed Rudisill and wife Sandy of Iron Station; nine grandchildren, Holly Rudisill, Emilie Rudisill, Brandon Rudisill, Lacey Rudisill, Nicole Rudisill, Lee Ellen Rudisill, J.R. Rudisill, III, Whitney Oehler, Allie Durham and a great granddaughter, Olivia Oehler.

A funeral service will be held 3 p.m. on Saturday, January 31, 2015 at Christ’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Stanley. Rev. Harvey Mozolak will officiate. The family will receive friends at the church from 1 p.m. until 3 p.m. Interment will follow in Salem Baptist Church Cemetery in Lincolnton.

Dorothy ‘Dot’ Owen Smith
Mrs. Dorothy “Dot” Owen Smith, 88, of Lincolnton, passed away Wednesday, January 28, 2015, at CMC Lincolnton.

Her funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, January 31, 2015, in the Warlick Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Dr. Andy Royals officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until 2:30 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.

She was a native of Davidson County and was preceded in death by her parents, John H. Owen Sr. and Lula Spry Owen; her husband, John F. Smith and three brothers.

Dorothy is survived by her children and spouses, Tony A. Smith and Wanda of Lincolnton, Deanna S. Whiteside and Bill of Gastonia, Bobby V. Smith and Debbie of Maiden, Jody B. Smith and Diane of Delaware, Patrick M. Smith and Julie of Denver; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; sister, Pallie Jane Hege of Lexington; brother, Bobby Jo Owen of Lexington; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Max Hull

Max Hull, 82, of 6137 W. Hwy 27, Vale, passed away Wednesday, January 28, 2015 at Carolinas HealthCare System Lincoln in Lincolnton.

He was born in Lincoln County on August 22, 1932, to the late Tom Hull and Bonnie Hudson Hull. He was the owner and operator of Hull’s Garage and was a member of Hull’s Grove Baptist Church.

In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by his brother, Ted Hull and sister, Peggy Boyles.

He is survived by his wife, Betty Jo Smith Hull; son, Kelly Hull of Vale; two daughters, Maxine Leatherman and husband Clarence and Joan Hull both of Vale; sister, Barbara Goins of Denver; four grandchildren, Brian Leatherman, Josh Leatherman, Kayla Jenkins and Johnny Laws; and seven great grandchildren.

Visitation will be held this evening from 5:30 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. at Hull’s Grove Baptist Church in Vale. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, January 31, 2015 at Hull’s Grove Baptist Church. Rev. Marcus Redding will officiate.

Mr. James Carroll Hoyle, age 82, of Lincolnton, died on Tuesday, January 27, 2015.

His funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, January 31, 2015, at Pisgah United Methodist Church with Pastor David Duncan officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The body will lie in state for 30 minutes prior to the service. Visitation will be held from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. this evening, January 30, 2015, at Warlick Funeral Home. At other times, the family will be at the home of Robbin Hoyle, 2760 W. Highway 27 in Lincolnton.

Mr. Hoyle was born June 22, 1932, in York, S.C., to the late Loy E and Mary Blackwood Hoyle. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his wife, Rosemary Hardy Hoyle; two brothers; one sister; and a granddaughter. He served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict and then later retired after 20 years from the Tampa Fire Department as a lieutenant.

He is survived by two daughters, Vikki Fritch and husband Larry of Tampa, Fla., and Robbin Hoyle and husband Chris Hartman of Lincolnton; a brother, Bob Hoyle of Vale; two sisters, Helen Leatherman of Lincolnton and Doris Duckworth of Vale; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and his special friend, Faye White of Vale.

Katherine Beal Jacobs, age 88, of 961 Moorland Lane in Lincolnton, died on Tuesday, January 27, 2015.

A memorial service will be held at noon on Saturday, January 31, 2015, at Laboratory United Methodist Church with Pastor Charlene Hutchings officiating. Inurnment will follow in Hollybrook Cemetery.

Ms. Jacobs was born July 21, 1926, in Lincoln County, to the late Charlie and Laura P. Beal. She worked in food service.

She is survived by two sons, John Gilbert and wife Dorothy of Waxhaw, and Terry Gilbert and wife Beth of Birmingham, Ala.; three grandchildren, Joel Gilbert, Gerry Gilbert, and Katie Grace; and five great-grandchildren, Avery Grace, Harper Grace, Grayson Gilbert, Brooks Gilbert, and Reagan Gilbert.

Martha Jane Gray Carpenter, age 84, of 1613 Arden Drive in Lincolnton, passed away at home on Wednesday, January 28, 2015.

Mrs. Carpenter was born October 22, 1930, in Hawesville, Ky., to the late Charles and Mary Ann Egan Gray. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by a son Scott Carpenter; a daughter Jeannie Bush; seven brothers; one sister; and two grandchildren, William and Tina Rae. She was a loving wife and mother of so many.

She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Paul G. Carpenter; four daughters Barbara Kiser and husband Carl Alan of Lincolnton, Cindy Kieft and husband Ronnie of Lumberton, NJ, Rose Mary Carter and husband Kelly of Gastonia, and Linda Paulette Tuno of Lincolnton; a son Paul Evans Carpenter and wife Gina of Denver; three sisters Mildred Riley of Kentucky, Shirley Perkins of Florida, Barbara Eganlauf of New Jersey; twenty-one grandchildren; and twenty-two great-grandchildren.
