Jerry Lackey Gantt

CHERRYVILLE — Jerry Lackey Gantt, 74, of the Summerset Court died Wednesday, July 16, 2014. He was born March 17, 1940 to Kathaleen Lackey Gantt, and the late Gamel T. Gantt Jr. of Vale.

He graduated from North Brook High School, Western Carolina University and was a member of Mt. Vernon Baptist Church, Vale.

Survivors include his mother, Kathaleen Gantt; two brothers, Steve Gantt and wife Janet, Eddie Gantt; sister-in-law Beverly Barts Gantt; and several nephews and nieces.

He was preceded in death by his father, G.T. Gantt Jr.; and brothers, Ronnie Gantt and Casey Gantt.

No funeral services are planned.

Gary Lee ‘Spud’ Beam

VALE — Mr. Gary Lee “Spud” Beam, age 48, of Vale, departed this life Wednesday, July 16, 2014. He is safe in the arms of his Savior, and we rejoice for him.

His funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, July 19, 2014, at Hulls Grove Baptist Church-West with Rev. Marcus Redding and Rev. Jared Webb officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The body will lie in state for 30 minutes prior to the service. Visitation will be from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. this evening at Hulls Grove Baptist Church.

Gary was the loving son of Nancy Sain Beam and the late Max Lee Beam. He was the devoted husband of Andrae Hines Beam to whom he was married for twenty-five years, celebrating his anniversary on the day of his passing. Gary was also the proud and loving father of Brittany Kay Beam and Justin Ross Beam. He worked as the Human Resources Manager for Patton’s, Inc. He loved the Lord, his family, and the North Carolina Tar Heels.

He is survived by his wife, Andrae Hines Beam of the home; son, Justin Beam of the home; daughter, Brittany Beam of the home; mother, Nancy Beam of Vale; brother, Matthew Beam and wife, Katherine of Charleston, S.C.; mother and father-in-law, John and Wanda Hines; brother-in-law, John Hines Jr. of Lincolnton; and nieces and nephews, Jessica Hines, Austin Hines, Caleb Hines, Joshua Beam, David Beam, Josiah Beam, Seth Beam, and Annabeth Beam.

Katherine Myrtice Tucker Perkins

MAIDEN — Katherine Myrtice Tucker Perkins, age 58, 2217 Payseur Street in Maiden, died on Wednesday, July 16, 2014.

Her funeral service will be 3 p.m. on Sunday, July 20, 2014, at New Hope Baptist Church with Rev. Bob Lynn officiating. Burial will follow in the Iron Station Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:30 p.m. until 2:45 p.m. prior to the service at the church.

Mrs. Perkins was born March 13, 1956, in Clarke County, Ga., to the late James Edward and Rose Louise Sims Tucker. She was a homemaker.

She is survived by her husband, Tim Perkins of the home; six daughters, Stephanie Craig and husband Harold of Lincolnton, Norma Biddix and husband Michael of Dallas, Carol Moody of Lincolnton, Paula Hanif and husband Jamie of Gastonia, Heather Moody of Athens, Ga., Kimberly Moody of Granite Falls; one brother, Jim Tucker and wife Shannon of Flowery Branch, Ga.; four sisters, Judy Palmer and husband Billy of Athens, Ga., Norma Peyton and husband R.O. of Watkinsville, Ga., Carol Day of Nashville, Tenn., and Myrna Quarels of Watkinsville, Ga.; twelve grandchildren, Austen, Celeste, April, Haley, Riley, Kayla, Abby, Kaden, Malachi, Selena, Jeremiah, Devin; many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews; and several step-grandchildren.

Harold Lee Wilkinson

DENVER — Harold Lee Wilkinson, 78, of Denver passed away Wednesday, July16, 2014 at Carolinas Medical Center, Charlotte.

Born December 5, 1935 in Lincoln County, he was the son of the late John Carson Wilkinson and the late Berlie Elizabeth Hager Wilkinson. In addition to his parents, his wife, Eva Sigmon Wilkinson; four brothers and three sisters preceded him in death.

Survivors include: two sons, Jeff Wilkinson and Kenneth Wilkinson both of Denver; one sister, Jackie Garrison of Denver; three grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren.

The funeral service will be held today at 2 p.m. at Burke Mortuary Chapel in Maiden with Rev. Harvey Gates officiating. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Lincolnton. The family will receive friends, prior to the service, from 1 p.m. until 1:45 p.m. at the funeral home.

Christopher Randall Hallman

Christopher Randall Hallman, 31, of 306 Terrace Place in Lincolnton, died from complications of a long battle with Muscular Dystrophy on Monday, July 14, 2014.

His funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, July 22, 2014, at First Presbyterian Church with Rev. Mary McKey and Rev. Veronica Cannon officiating. Burial will follow in Hollybrook Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Monday, July 21, 2014, at Warlick Funeral Home.

Christopher was born December 16, 1982. He was the son of Randy and Ann Hallman. He was preceded in death by his brother, Thomas Cameron Hallman, and paternal grandparents, Evan and Ruth Hallman. Christopher was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Lincolnton. He loved God, his family, and his friends of all ages. His dog, Rocky, was a faithful companion.

Christopher graduated from Lincolnton High School and remained a loyal Wolves fan. He was a huge fan of the UNC Tarheels and also enjoyed pulling for the Carolina Panthers, the Atlanta Braves, and the Carolina Hurricanes. He loved watching WWE Wrestling and spending time with friends on Facebook.

Christopher was an awesome big brother and role model for his younger brother, Cameron, who preceded him in death.

He is survived by his parents, Randy and Ann Hallman of the home; and maternal grandparents, Ralph and Nancy Freeman of Lincolnton.

M/Sgt William M. Whitener

M/Sgt William M. Whitener, Ret. USAF, Vietnam Veteran William “Bill” Whitener, age 75, went home to be with the Lord on April 13, 2014.

He was born in Maiden to the late Ella Louise Fullwood and William Howard Whitener and grew up in the Methodist Children’s Home in Winston-Salem.

He is survived by his wife of nearly 56 years Carolyn; children, Kathy Spinella and husband Phil of Homestead, Fla., Kim Givens and husband Phil of Loxahatchee, Fla., William “Mike” Whitener and wife Linda of Mansfield, Tex., Dawn Gilley and husband Roger of Homestead, Fla.; 12 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two sisters, Betty Howard of Gainesville, Ga. and Margaret Whitener of Winston-Salem; three nieces and one nephew.

He was preceded in death by a son, Allen Whitener. The night of his passing, he was surrounded by all four generations of family who loved him dearly. Bill joined the USAF following high school and served three tours in Vietnam with the 1st Air Commando Squadron. He retired after 23 years of service to his country. Bill spent much of his life giving to his community. For many years he coached youth football and baseball in Homestead and was instrumental in building facilities for youth sports at Homestead AFB. He was nominated for Dade County Citizen of the Year for these efforts. Bill was a Model Railroad enthusiast and a member of the Gold Coast Railroad Museum in South Florida and spent many years raising money and working to restore a piece of American History. Bill was a member of St. Peter’s United Methodist Church in Wellington, Fla. He will be laid to rest at St. Matthews United Church of Christ Cemetery in Maiden, July 19, 2014 at 11 a.m.

IRON STATION — Sarah Payne Bradshaw, age 87, of The Brian Center in Lincolnton and formerly of E. Highway 27 in Iron Station died Tuesday, July 15, 2014.

A graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 19, 2014 at Iron Station Cemetery. Rev. Mel Burton will officiate.

Mrs. Bradshaw was born April 18, 1927 in Gaston County. She was the daughter of the late Julius Payne and Mattie Clemmer Payne. Mrs. Bradshaw was preceded in death by her husband Joseph Edgar “J.E.” Bradshaw Jr. She retired from Talon Inc. Sarah was a member of Iron Station United Methodist Church where she served in various areas until her declining health.

Survivors include her daughter, Susan B. Brymer and husband Jackie of Iron Station; sons, Larry Wilson and wife Frances of Maiden and Ronald Dean Wilson and wife Donna of Calif.; sister, Ann Frost of Great Falls, S.C.; grandchildren, Joseph and Andie Brymer, Katherine and Dr. Carl Szezesniak, Elizabeth and Ryan Hadley, Angie and Shawn Mull and Patrick Wilson; seven great grandchildren.

KINGS MOUNTAIN — Mary Alice Smith Carpenter, age 77 of Ashley Jordan Lane, died Wednesday, July 16, 2014 at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte. She was born on May 29, 1937 in Gaston County to the late Fred “Porchie” and Beulah Neal Smith. Alice attended Patterson Grove Baptist Church. She enjoyed making jewelry and her greatest passion was working with flowers.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 44 years, Donald Keith Carpenter; daughters, Allison Jeanene Carpenter, and Cynthia Carpenter Harris; brothers, Jim, Robert, Bill, and Jack Smith; and sisters, Gladys Isenhour, Jeannette Smith, and Ruby Smith.

Survivors include her daughters, Keitha Carpenter Reep and husband, Greg of Kings Mountain and Vanessa Henderson of Forest City; brother, Ford Smith of Cherryville; sister, Vickie Bryan and husband, Roger of Lincolnton; grandchildren, Lisa Anthony, Jennifer Leeper, Keith Harris, and Jordan Reep; and seven great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held noon today at Patterson Grove Baptist Church with Rev. Dr. Tim Hendrick officiating. Burial will follow in City Memorial Cemetery. The family received friends on Thursday, July 17, 2014 from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Carpenter’s Funeral & Cremation Services.
