Two teens will appear in court today on attempted first-degree murder charges after allegedly shooting the mother of one of the suspects in the head Wednesday morning following an argument at a Catawba County home.
Sherri Rhoney was rushed to a Charlotte hospital with life-threatening injuries after an off-duty Lincoln County deputy spotted the woman just before 12 p.m. bleeding from her head and lying in the grass outside her Cooksville home at 6570 Old Shelby Road, Catawba County deputies said.
Lincoln County Deputy Barry Holt had been driving down the road when he saw the victim, Sheriff Coy Reid said.
The woman’s son and pregnant girlfriend have each been charged in the incident.
The location is roughly 25 miles from the Lincoln-Catawba line.
While the teen suspects, Daniel Austin Rhoney, 17, of the same Old Shelby Road residence, and Elizabeth Paige Fowler, 16, of 6980 Misty Valley Lane in Vale, first told officers they, too, found Sherri Rhoney injured and didn’t know what had happened, they finally spoke out about an argument that took place earlier that day among the three individuals, the Catawba County Sheriff’s Office said.
Deputies are uncertain of specifics surrounding the argument but believe it pertained to the victim’s decision to kick her son out of the house.
Sherri Rhoney was airlifted to Carolinas Medical Center-Main in Charlotte where Reid said she remains.
The suspects remain behind bars, Daniel Rhoney under a $1,000,000 bond and Fowler under a $500,000 bond.
