Pageant registration

Today is the deadline to enter the Miss Fourth of July Pageant, sponsored by The Miss Gastonia Scholarship Association. The pageant will be 4:15 p.m. Wednesday at the mini-park gazebo in downtown Cherryville and will be the official kickoff event for the city’s Fourth of July celebration. Ages newborn to 19 are eligible to compete. July 4th parade

The City of Cherryville will host an Independence Day Celebration 6-10 p.m. at the mini-park in downtown Cherryville featuring Guest D.J. John Barkely and Jim Quick & The Coastline Band. Fireworks will follow at 10 p.m. There will also be food vendors. Attendants are asked to bring a lawn chair.

 
THURSDAY
July 4th parade

The city of Denver will host a Fourth of July parade starting 10 a.m. at Fairfield UMC, 7860 Fairfield Forest Rd. in Denver, and ending at The Episcopal Church of St. Peter-by-the-Lake, 8433 Fairfield Rd. in Denver. Veterans will be honored, and awards will be given for decorated tricycles, pets, vehicles, floats and more.

 July 4th parade

The town of Maiden will host their annual Edith Pirkle Parade at 10:30 a.m. with lineup 10 a.m. at the Maiden Library. Grand Marshall and N.C. General Assembly Rep. Mitchell Setzer will lead the parade, which will conclude in the parking lot of Cornerstone FLC. Food vendors will be on hand, and awards will be given for the best child and adult costumes along with best vehicle and best all-around.

Crouse will host their annual Fourth of July parade 4 p.m. with lineup 3 p.m. at Crouse UMC, Pleasant Grove Ch. Rd. in Crouse.

The City of Lincolnton is currently looking for parade entries for its upcoming July 4th Celebration starting 8 p.m. July 4 in the downtown area. Lineup will be 6:30-7:30 p.m. at Fifth Third Bank on E. Main St. To obtain an entry form, individuals may stop by City Hall, W. Sycamore St., or call (704) 736-8980. Deadline for submission is June 28.

Church buffet

New Student Orientation

Gaston College will host a four-day Basic Skills New Student Orientation class 9 a.m. to noon and 5:30-8:30 p.m. July 8-11 in room 118 of the Lincoln Campus, 511 S. Aspen St. in Lincolnton. Changes to the GED will commence in 2014, affecting cost and method of testing. Previous partial test scores will also expire. Students are required to take the orientation class before taking the GED or receiving an Adult High School diploma. Additional class dates will be July 22-25 and Aug. 5-8.
