Marimor raises money for charity with pizza shop

LIMA — Pepsi Beverages Co. of Lima, Rudolph Foods and Westgate Lanes have partnered with Marimor Industries to raise funds for charities and the community.

Pizza, soda and snacks donated by these local businesses will be sold at the “Marimor Pizza Shop” from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Friday at Marimor, 2450 Ada Road.

Proceeds from the sales will be donated to the Muscular Dystrophy Association, St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital and other charitable community events throughout the year.

The event is open to individuals enrolled in the Marimor Industries Adult Services program and Marimor staff.

Marimor is a private, nonprofit corporation that provides training, employment and habilitation services to individuals with developmental disabilities in Allen County.

South plans documentary premiere on survivors

LIMA — South Science and Technology Magnet School will premiere a documentary on cancer at 7 p.m. Feb. 8 in the Lima Senior Auditorium, 1 Spartan Way.

The student-created documentary is the project of South Science and Technology Magnet eighth-graders and features interviews with cancer survivors and people who have lost loved ones to the disease. Students interviewed Lima City Schools’ staff members and community members for the documentary.

A freewill donation will be accepted at the door, with proceeds going to Pelotonia, a bike tour that funds cancer research at The Ohio State University. Students have also made bracelets that will be for sale with proceeds going to Pelotonia.

Chad Stearns of Modo Media guided the 18 students who constructed the project. The project was part of this year’s Stardust: The William A. Fowler Science Series.

Allen East announces students of the quarter

LAFAYETTE — Allen East has announced the sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade students of the quarter for the second quarter.

They are Blaine Cochensparger, Cameron Hedrick and Trey Braun.

LCC celebrating Catholic Schools Week with themes

LIMA — This week is National Catholic Schools Week. This year’s National Catholic Schools Week theme is “Catholic Schools: Communities of Faith, Knowledge and Service.”

Lima Central Catholic High School is celebrating on a daily basis using the theme.

On Monday, students participated in Faith, Knowledge and Service: In Our Community. Students took time to appreciate the sacrifice made by men and women in uniform. They also sent a video thanking their parents for choosing Catholic education.

On Tuesday, students participated in Faith, Knowledge and Service: In Our Students. The faculty and staff created a video explaining the reasons students make Lima Central Catholic High School the great school that it is.

On Wednesday, the students participate in Faith, Knowledge and Service: In Our Nation. Students, faculty and staff will join with other Catholic schools in the area to celebrate a Mass at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church in honor of National Appreciation Day for Catholic schools. Mass begins at 9:30 a.m. and is open to the public.

Thursday, students participate in Faith, Knowledge and Service: In Our Vocations. All students and faculty will be treated to a presentation by Deacon Patrick Minnich during theology class and faculty development.

Friday, students participate in Faith, Knowledge and Service: In Our Faculty, Staff and Volunteers. Students put together a video thanking all faculty for the things they do that often go unnoticed.

Betty’s Farm to offer cooking classes

LIMA — The Social Living Club at Betty’s Farm is offering a six-week cooking class to individuals with autism and other developmental disabilities.

The cooking class will cover culinary basics such as kitchen safety, reading recipes, different types of cooking utensils, working with kitchen appliances, and learning how to follow a recipe. The six-week class begins at 6 p.m. Feb. 15 at Betty’s Farm in Lima. Subsequent classes will be offered Feb. 22, as well as March 1, 8, 15 and 22.

St. Marys buildings committee plans executive session

ST. MARYS — The St. Marys schools buildings and grounds committee will hold a meeting in executive session at 4 p.m. Wednesday in the Administrative Office, 100 W. Spring St.

Allen East kindergarten registration scheduled

HARROD — Kindergarten registration for the 2017-18 school year at Allen East will run from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. or 3:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. Feb. 21-23 at the elementary school office.

People should enter through the L-1 door into the school office. The child need not be present. Parents or guardians must bring the child’s birth certificate, Social Security card, shot record, official custody papers if that applies and two verifications of residence, such as a recent utility bill, a deed to a home or a receipt from cable hook up.

St. Rita’s Health Partners offering scholarships

LIMA — St. Rita’s Health Partners has created a scholarship program to offer area high school students the opportunity to gain degrees in the healthcare field.

Students in Allen, Auglaize, Hardin, Hancock, Logan, Mercer, Paulding, Putnam, Shelby and Van Wert counties can apply to receive one of 10 $1,500 scholarships to help pay for postsecondary education related to health care, be it at the associate, bachelor, master or professional level.

To qualify, applicants must submit a scholarship application, an official high school transcript and a one to two-page essay on why they believe this is what they were meant to do. Submission deadline is 4 p.m. Feb. 24.

Vantage Career Center to hold open house

VAN WERT — Vantage Career Center will have its open house from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Feb. 27.

Vantage is located at 818 N. Franklin St.

Bath Elementary announces plans for 2017-18 kindergarten

LIMA — Bath Elementary is taking names for the 2017-18 kindergarten class. Children must be 5 years old on or before Aug. 1 to qualify for the 2017-18 school year.

Parents need to pick-up information packet in the elementary office from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., located at 2450 Bible Road, Lima. At that time, parents will sign-up for a screening time for their child. Screenings will take place March 7, 8 and 9.

Hardin Northern announces kindergarten plans

DOLA — Hardin Northern scheduled kindergarten screenings for the 2017-18 school year from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. April 5, at the elementary gym, 11589 state Route 81, Dola.

Children must be 5 years of age on or before Aug. 1, to be eligible for next year’s kindergarten class.

Call elementary secretary Jodi Thiel at 419-759-2331 to schedule an appointment. Appointments will be scheduled between the hours of 9 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Parents need to bring their child’s birth certificate, Social Security card, immunization records, custody papers if they apply and proof of residency.
