Lima West students to present ‘Living Wax Museum Career Fair’

LIMA — The Career Connections Class at Lima West Middle School will present a “Living Wax Museum Career Fair” from 8:35 to 9:12 a.m. and from 9:53 to 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the school, 503 N. Cable Road.

Students will pretend to be wax people of various professions. When someone presses a talk button, they will share their information about the career they chose.

The event is free and open to the community.

Fundraiser to benefit Shively Memorial Scholarship Fund

LIMA — A fundraiser to benefit the Jonathan R. Shively Memorial Scholarship Fund will be held Jan. 25 and 26 at Buffalo Wings & Rings, 1939 Roschman Ave.

Buffalo Wings & Rings will donate 10 percent of each food bill to the scholarship fund between the hours of 3 and 8 p.m. on those days.

The fund awards scholarships to Perry High School seniors. Shively, who coached at Perry schools for 17 years, lost his battle with cancer in 2011.

St. Marys school board to meet in executive session

ST. MARYS — The St. Marys City Board of Education will meet at 6 p.m. Wednesday in the district’s administrative offices, 100 W. Spring St.

The board will meet in executive session during this special meeting.

New Bremen plans financial work session

LIMA — West Central Learning Academy is holding a special school board meeting at 1:30 p.m. Jan. 26 at its location, 522 W. North St.

Therapist speaks at Lima City Schools’ MVP meeting

LIMA — Michael Schoenhofer, a family therapist, and Byron Selden will speak at Lima City Schools’ Most Valuable Parent dinner and meeting held at 5:30 p.m. Monday at Lima West Middle School, 503 N. Cable Road.

A free dinner begins at 5:30 followed by the meeting.

This month’s meeting will focus on setting and keeping goals in the new year. The program will help parents get in shape, eat healthier, get out of debt, spend less and save more, spend more time with family and get organized. There will be recipes, physical fitness activities, demonstrations on how to organize, and financial tips.

Putnam County Help Me Grow offers free screenings

OTTAWA — Putnam County Help Me Grow early childhood specialists are offering free screenings for Putnam County infants, toddlers and preschoolers from 1 to 4 p.m. Tuesday at the Putnam County Educational Service Center, 124 Putnam Parkway.

Developmental screenings include hearing, vision, physical development, speech and language, behavioral and play skills.

Injured Lima Senior grad speaks to pupils

LIMA — A 2011 Lima Senior High School graduate offered words of inspiration to North Middle School pupils Wednesday.

Austin Beggin had broken his C3 and C4 vertebrae, damaging his spine while swimming in the ocean on a family vacation. He had just graduated from Ohio State with a business degree. While there was doubt as to whether Beggin would survive, he continues to improve, often seen at basketball games and other school events.

Beggin’s address built on the theme of overcoming obstacles that students in Robin Hullinger’s class had been studying in literature classes.

Elida students performed at OMEA concert

ELIDA — Elida High School students Colin Parent and Joshua Guess were selected to perform at the Ohio Music Education Association District 3 Honors Band, Choir and Jazz Band concert held Sunday at The Van Wert Niswonger Performing Arts Center.

Parent is a senior and plays the french horn. He played in the concert band portion of the concert.

Guess is a junior and plays the trumpet. He played in the jazz band portion of the concert.

Elida High School band director John Stetler and Bluffton High School’s David Sycks conducted the Jazz Band.

Elida freshman Ryan Vetters and senior Justus Guerrero auditioned and were selected to be part of District 3 Honors Choir.

Annual Scholastic Book Fair scheduled at Lima Public Library

LIMA — Ohio State Lima’s Education Club will hold its annual Scholastic Book Fair at the Lima Public Library, basement room, 650 W. Market St., on Friday and Saturday. The sale will feature books on many subjects and levels, but it primarily focuses on materials for elementary aged students.

Hours are from 2 to 5 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.

In past years, the club has used the proceeds from the sale to make book donations to the library. In 2017, the club hopes to donate at least $500 worth of books.

Registration open for ACT prep course

LIMA — The Lima Central Catholic Academic Booster Club is offering an ACT Preparation Course designed to help students improve their performance when taking the April ACT test.

The classes will include eight, three-hour sessions and two practice tests. Participants will be placed in two groups, with a maximum of 15 people in a group. The classes begin Jan. 28 and will be held each Saturday through March 18.

The cost of the course is $225 for LCC students and $300 for non-LCC students. Preregistration with payment is due Friday.

Signup and payment should be made at the Business Office at LCC between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. weekdays. Questions can be directed to Stephanie Evans, ACT Class coordinator, at 419-230-5040.

Franklin Elementary sets

kindergarten screenings

DELPHOS — Franklin Elementary School will hold a registration for kindergarten screening for the 2017-18 school year from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily the week of Feb. 6 to 10.

Children who will be 5 years of age before Aug. 1 are eligible to attend. After picking up registration materials from the school, located at 310 E. Fourth St., parents can schedule an appointment to have their children screened for kindergarten. Screening clinics will be held from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. March 3, 10 and 17.

Van Wert Nursing Association accepting scholarship applications

VAN WERT — The Van Wert Nurses Association will be awarding nursing scholarships in May.

Applicants must be working toward their first degree in nursing or an advanced nursing degree and have been accepted in an accredited school of nursing.

Applications must be completed and returned by April 1. Scholarships will be awarded at the May 8 meeting.

Faith friendly music education program offered in Delphos

DELPHOS — Little Angels by Making Music Praying Twice is an early childhood music education program that encourages both musical and spiritual development for young children.

The program is designed for children from birth to age 5, along with a parent. The cost for the program is $75 for the first child or $100 total for two or more children in the family. Classes will be held at 6:30 p.m. Mondays beginning Feb. 20 in the basement of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Elementary School, Delphos.

Crestview holds spelling bee, winners move to county competition

CRESTVIEW — Crestview held both its elementary and middle school spelling bees with winners moving on to higher competitions.

The winners and runners up were:

Fifth grade: Winner Olivia Ramos and runner-up Addison Williman.

Sixth grade: Winner Kendra Spieth and runner-up Chloe Black.

Seventh grade: Winner Sophia Saylor and runner-up Aidan Ankney.

Eighth grade: Winner Carson Kreischer and runner-up Preston Eberle.

The overall Crestview Middle School champion was seventh-grader Sophia Saylor.

Crestview winners advance to the Van Wert County Spelling Bee at 7 p.m. Feb. 2 in the Marsh auditorium.

Alzheimer’s Foundation offers scholarship program

NEW YORK — Alzheimer’s Foundation of America is offering a college scholarship essay competition open to all high school seniors who will enter a four-year accredited college or university within the next year. One grand prize of $5,000 with first and second runner-up prizes of $2,500 and $1,000 each will be awarded.

To enter, college-bound high school seniors must submit a 1,200- to 1,500-word essay that demonstrates how Alzheimer’s disease has impacted their lives and what they have learned about themselves, their family and/or their community in the face of coping with the illness. Existing college students are not eligible to apply.

Applications may be submitted via the online application form or mailed to Alzheimer’s Foundation of America, 322 Eighth Ave., 7th Floor, New York, NY 10001, Attention: AFA Teens College Scholarship. Applications sent via U.S. mail must be postmarked no later than Feb. 15.

Plumbers, Pipefitters donate hats and gloves to Heritage Elementary

LIMA — Plumbers, Pipefitters & Service Technicians union Local 776 is donating hats and gloves to children who attend Heritage Elementary School at 10 a.m. Friday at Heritage Elementary School, 816 College Ave.

Local 776’s apprentices held a hat and glove driver after members noticed that many students were coming to school without adequate winter clothing.

Meteorologist Mikell to visit Liberty Arts Magnet School

LIMA — Local meteorologist Jason Mikell will visit Liberty Arts Magnet School on Thursday.

Mikell is chief meteorologist at Your Hometown Stations. He will do a presentation on weather to Liberty first-graders.

Mikell will be in Mary Moore’s first-grade classroom and in Alyssa Lauck’s classroom.
