Man with cerebral palsy speaks to Bluffton students
BLUFFTON — Peter De Meo spent an evening with the class of Bluffton University Professor Tim Byers. With October being “celebrate diversity” month, the class learned about the challenges of growing up in California (a youth in Pandora and now a Bluffton resident) with cerebral palsy.
De Meo shared his challenges with the school systems, positive and negative teachers, traveling, building and maintaining relationships, medical challenges and many more lessons for this group of teacher education candidates. Peter had the group laughing, crying but most importantly, having a much better understanding of working and teaching those who are “differently abled,” a news release stated.
Wapak grad receives excellence award
TOLEDO — Zachary Holtzapple has been selected for the 2014-15 Donald F. Othmer Excellence Award. This award is presented to one student member of each chapter of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers who has attained the highest scholastic GPA during his freshman and sophomore years of college.
Holtzapple attends the University of Toledo and is enrolled in chemical engineering. He is a 2013 graduate of Wapakoneta High School. He has been invited to the annual Student Conference and Recognition Ceremony in November in Salt Lake City.
Rhodes State hosts information sessions
LIMA — Rhodes State College, in collaboration with The Bradfield Center, offered three Family Information Sessions at the Bradfield Center on Wednesday. Sessions were designed to help families of middle and high school students plan for higher education.
Representatives presented a college planning timeline, discussed college funding resources such as grants, student loans and scholarships, and gave a presentation on the fastest growing occupations in the region and state.
Students awarded degrees at Miami University
OXFORD — More than 500 Miami University students graduated in the summer term, including three St. Marys natives.
Taylor Arnett received a Bachelor of Science degree in applied science, Amy Bruno became a Specialist in Education and Bryce Finkenbine received a Bachelor of Science degree in kinesiology and health.
ONU professor to speak on entrepreneurship
ADA — Karen Powell, Ohio Northern University assistant professor of law, will speak about “Entrepreneurship in New Industries: American Revival of Craft Spirits” in the Dicke Forum at 6 p.m. Nov. 4.
Before joining the faculty at the ONU Pettit College of Law, Powell founded Triple Divide Spirits, a craft distillery in Montana that produced locally sourced vodka, gin and rum with an onsite tasting room. She’ll speak to the process of entrepreneurship in new industries, challenges of a highly regulated field, and the learning curve of craft spirits, agricultural connections, and regulators.
Delphos grad wins scholarship
ATHENS — Kelsey Britt, daughter of Chris and Kathy Britt, of Delphos, has been awarded the 2015 AMS/Richard and Helen Hagemeyer Scholarship. Britt is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in meteorology at Ohio University.
Twenty-three senior undergraduate scholarships were awarded this year. The scholarships are designed to encourage senior undergraduates to continue pursuing careers in the atmospheric and related oceanic and hydrological sciences.
Britt is interested in severe weather and mesoscale meteorology. She is performing undergraduate research in cyclic tornadogenesis and would like to continue on this path while pursuing graduate school.
Concert to feature James Bond tunes
FINDLAY — The Eighth Annual Oiler Brass concert, “Sounds of the Stadium,” directed by Richard Napierala, will take place at 2 p.m. Nov. 3 in Winebrenner Theological Seminary’s TLB Auditorium.
Admission is free but tickets are required. They can be obtained at the door or in advance at the UF Box Office by calling 419-434-5335, emailing boxoffice@findlay.edu, or stopping by in the Alumni Memorial Union on Frazer Street from 2 to 5 p.m. Mondays through Fridays.
This year’s event will feature three separate shows. Show No. 1 will showcase patriotic music, including “America,” a U.S. Armed Forces medley, “Shenandoah,” and “Trooper Salute.” Show No. 2 will include music from James Bond films. The James Bond theme song will be performed, along with tunes from “Skyfall,” “Die Another Day,” and “Live and Let Die.” The musical “Les Misérables” will be the focus of Show No. 3. It will include “On My Own/Do You Hear the People Sing,” “I Dreamed a Dream,” “Work Song,” and “At the End of the Day.”
