Description:

Tuscany is one of the most popular regions in Italy, Tuscany stretches from the Tyrrhenian Sea to the Apennines. Its main cities include Florence, Pisa, Siena, Lucca, Arezzo and Livorno.

Tuscany conjures up romantic images of idyllic hill towns bristling with medieval towers, flowing green landscapes of low hills, and fields of sunflowers. It's a tough reputation to live up to, but Tuscany does it with ease.
This landscape is studded with some of Italy's best-loved cities and attractions: Florence, the Leaning Tower of Pisa, Siena, and lovely little Lucca.
Add the island of Elba and a clutch of hill towns, each with its own distinct character and history, and consider that this was the cradle of one of the greatest artistic and philosophical revolutions in Europe's history: the Renaissance.

With its manicured fields, rustic farms, cypress-lined driveways, and towns clinging to nearly every hill, Tuscany is our romantic image of village Italy.
Venture beyond the fringes of Florence and you'll find a series of sun- and wine-soaked villages, each with its own appeal.
Stretching from the Umbrian border to the Ligurian Sea, the landscape changes from pastoral (Crete Senesi) to rocky (Chianti) to mountainous (the Montagnola) to flat and brushed with sea breezes (Pisa).

Drive between stunning sites like Florence's cathedral and Uffizi Gallery and the Leaning Tower of Pisa.
Or join a bike tour and pedal past sun-baked olive groves and vineyards.
Don't miss the towers of San Gimignano or serene northern hill towns.

Tuscany, like a fine wine, has been some time in the making...
From the Etruscans to the Romans to the Renaissance, Tuscany is possibly the greatest repository of art in the world, from extraordinary paintings and sculpture to frescoes and architectural masterpieces.

Visitors to Tuscany come for many reasons.
Many come in search of fine art, others to explore the extraordinary countryside.
Gourmets and wine buffs descend on Tuscany to enjoy the simple yet wonderful cuisine and wine. Walkers enjoy the mountain paths, cyclists the rolling hills, summer vacationers the sea coast and islands. Students come to learn the beautiful Italian language and culture.
There is a lot to see and do in Tuscany, the difficulty is really where to start.

Certainly most should start with Florence, then continue on to Siena and Pisa. The roll call of città di arte, cities of art, is daunting: Arezzo, Cortona, San Gimignano and Lucca are all striking. The more you come to know the region, the more extraordinary Tuscany appears.

FLORENCE FIRENZE
No place on earth can you take deeper into the heart and soul of the Renaissance than Florence, where it all began.
Florence its humanist thinkers, painters, sculptors, craftsmen, architects, and the aristocracy whose patronage supported and nurtured the artistic genius and gave it the freedom to create - pulled Italy and subsequently Europe out of the Dark Ages and into the age of enlightenment. Everywhere you look, you'll find the very best examples of this exciting rebirth, but the highest single concentration is in and around Piazza del Duomo. Dominating the skyline is Brunelleschi's great dome. Rising beside it is Giotto's marble-faced tower. Below is the baptistery with Ghiberti's masterpieces, the incomparable bronze doors of the Gates of Paradise....

Coast and beaches in Tuscany - Many people forget that there are some are great places to stay on the Tuscan coast.
Base yourself in Viareggio and you get the best of both worlds: it’s easy to reach by train from Pisa airport, has hotels for all budgets (see below).
Swim and sunbathe on soft golden sands and explore the area by train or local bus. Pisa, Lucca, Livorno and Florence are all within an hour on public transport.

Florence Art-packed, bustling city starring Michelangelo’s David, Renaissance paintings, and Brunelleschi’s dome with Ponte Vecchio spanning the flood-prone Arno River.
Siena Red-brick hilltop city known for its pageantry, Palio horse race, and a stunning traffic-free main square great anytime but best after dark.
It's also a fine home base for exploring the Tuscan countryside with a driving tour of the Crete Senesi.
Pisa A city more famous for its iconic Leaning Tower than for its other equally impressive monuments on the gleaming white Field of Miracles.
San Gimignano Epitome of a hill town, spiked with medieval towers offering superb views, popular with tourists who crowd the narrow alleys by day.
Montalcino Wine-lovers’ paradise boasting a dramatic 14th-century castle, encircled by olive groves and famous vineyards.
Pienza Tiny Renaissance-planned architectural gem of a town nestled in a scenic hilly landscape.
Cortona Hillside town under the Tuscan sun, with historic churches and museums featuring Etruscan and Renaissance artifacts and art.
Lucca Charming city with a lively (and flat) town center, ringed by intact old walls wide enough for biking and strolling.
Volterra Just far enough off the beaten path, surrounded by thick walls and hilly scenery, with a long Etruscan history and unusually interesting sightseeing for a small town.
Montepulciano Rugged town crowning a ridge, with dreamy vistas of the countryside and wine-tasting in inviting cantinas.

The climate in Tuscany is mild with differences depending on the geography of each area.
The coast and valleys tend to have hotter summers than the hills or mountains although the coast benefits from breezes off the sea for cooler temperatures even in those warmer months.
Taking the weather into consideration, we would say Tuscany's best travel months (which are also its busiest and most expensive) are April, May, June, September, and October.
These months combine the convenience of peak season with pleasant weather.
They have sunny days, with some rainy days as well.
The most grueling thing about travel in Tuscany is the summer heat in July and August, when temperatures hit the high 80s and and into the 90s.
They are perfect for hanging out by the seaside or at your country estate by the poolwink, less for spending it sightseeing in the middle of the day in town.
