Episode 10 of Click With Nemo features an interview with Quinn Jacobson of Studio Q, plus a chance to win an account at Studio Q for access to Quinn's splendid online workshop videos for Wet Collodion photography.

The wet plate collodion process uses glass or metal plates, onto which a syrupy liquid, collodion, is poured to create positive or negative images with a view camera. This ancient photographic method is affordable and accessible, thanks to Quinn Jacobson of Studio Q in Denver, Colorado, USA. With his modern Chamonix large format cameras and vintage period lenses from the 1860s, Quinn conducts portrait sessions and workshops in his studio and on location.

Quinn has written books and done a series of videos on the Wet Collodion process, all of which are available from his website. "You need a good reason to work in old processes with large format cameras," he says. Once you see his amazing prints in person you will understand his passion, as did Nemo during an impromptu portrait session to test a batch of handmade developer. Collodion photos evoke a "powerful emotional and exciting experience," says Quinn, with "an otherness quality to the portraits."

In our high-intensity interview conducted in person at Studio Q in Denver, Quinn explains about "varnish or tarnish." The pure metallic silver on the Collodion plates needs to be protected with a hot varnish made of tree sap dissolved in grain alcohol, with a lavender oil aroma.

Quinn is an inspired and inspiring instructor and photographic artist. In his online videos, books, and blog he brings a fresh vitality to historical photographic process. Instead of back to the future, he is at the forefront of ahead to the past.
