Man United veteran star hails the Red Devils new sensation Marcus Rashford

Manchester United proven midfielder Michael Carrick says Marcus Rashford is keeping his feet firmly on the ground – despite the teenager winning Manchester United’s player of the month award for February.

The 18-year-old announced himself to the Old Trafford faithful with a stunning four-goal haul against FC Midtjylland and Arsenal after being drafted into the first-team following an injury to Anthony Martial.

Marcus Rashford was named as the Red Devils’ player of the month for February, winning the prize with 56 per cent of fan votes ahead of fellow nominees Memphis Depay (31 per cent) and Jesse Lingard (13 per cent).

And Michael Carrick admits that he has been impressed by Rashford’s mentality since his breakthrough into the Manchester United first team.

Speaking to Manchester United’s website this week, Carrick said: “He’s really down to earth.

“He’s quite quiet at the moment, but he might come out of his shell after this! I was talking to him in the changing room and he was talking about the atmosphere, what it means to him and seeing the fans respond, and all that type of thing.

“It’s a breath of fresh air, you know, and something that you take for granted in many ways, so to see what it means to the young lads and how they responded, is incredible really.”

Marcus Rashford will be hoping to feature when Manchester United return toPremier League action with a trip to West Bromwich Albion on Sunday afternoon.

Manchester United were 1-0 winners over Watford on Wednesday night.

Louis Van Gaal convinced Man United defender to stay at club

Guillermo Varela has revealed how LvG had to talk him out of quitting Manchester United.

The Uruguay international right back has emerged as one of United’s stand-out performers since the turn of the year, with injuries forcing Van Gaal to turn to the 22-year-old.

Now he is being tipped for an international call-up.

But he says he wanted to walk away from Old Trafford after failing to establish himself.

In 2013, Varela went on a two-week trial with Manchester United after an impressive performance at the 2013 South American Youth Championship.

On 7 June, Manchester United announced they had reached an agreement to sign Varela from Peñarol for an undisclosed fee, rumoured to be a €2.8 million. Hence, he became the first player to join Manchester United under new manager David Moyes. On 11 June, he signed a five-year contract.

Varela admits that it was only Louis Van Gaal who convinced him to abandon plans to leave during the January transfer window.

Varela told Uruguayan radio show Tirando Paredes: “First I wanted to leave, but Louis van Gaal asked me to stay.

“He gave me the opportunity and luckily I’ve played for many matches in a row.”

Varela – who was David Moyes’ first signing at United – has quickly won admirers at United.

Right back has become a problem position under Van Gaal’s reign.

And despite the summer signing of Matteo Darmian, Guillermo Varela is now seen as the long-term solution in that role.
