These days, you are spoiled for choice when you are on the lookout for holidays. Whether you want short city breaks, extended tropical vacations or anything else, you should be able to find exactly what you are after. Arguably some of the best trips are river cruises. These inland voyages provide you with the perfect combination of relaxation and culture.

The great thing about these adventures is the fact that you can simply sit back and let your tour operator transport you to a host of fascinating destinations. You don’t have to worry about driving or taking public transport. Also, as long as you choose good quality vessels, you can luxuriate in comfy surroundings in between stops.

Many people may be considering a Viking River Cruise. The firm has nine new-generation longships offering trips along the Rhine and the Danube, as well as longer voyages combining the two waterways. The Rhine Discovery break lasts for eight days and starts in Amsterdam. From here, you sail to Kinderdijk with its network of windmills and then on to Cologne. The vessel then continues to the 700-year-old Marksburg Castle and the ruins of Heidelberg Castle, before passing through the beautiful Black Forest region and on to Strasbourg, Breisach and Basel.

Meanwhile, the Danube Waltz tour, which also lasts for eight days, travels through Austria, Germany, Hungary and Slovakia, with stops at Passau, Salzburg, Vienna, Bratislava and Budapest, among other places.

Those after more exotic tours might want to consider a voyage along the Mekong River in south-east Asia. For example, 14-day cruises incorporating Vietnam and Cambodia are available. On these trips, holidaymakers can visit the likes of Ho Chi Minh City, Angkor Wat and the Cu Chi tunnels, as well as passing by lush green rice paddies.

The Nile is also a great spot for river cruises. This impressive waterway is the lifeblood of Egypt and it has played a huge role in the country’s history and development. Ancient history lovers are in their element on trips along this river. Meanwhile, a popular option in this part of the world is to ‘cruise and stay’. On vacations like these, you spend some time on the water cruising and sightseeing and some time on land in luxurious resorts simply relaxing.

Another option for cruise fans is the Yangtze River in China. Trips are available from the Forbidden City and highlights of the adventures include the Great Wall, the Three Gorges Dam and the Terra-Cotta Warrior statues in Xian’s History Museum.

Gemma Darkes is a huge cruise fan and has clocked up more than 100,000 miles aboard ships of all sizes.
