TechTool review Kids Health Info by The Royal Children’s Hospital on iOS and Android
When treating paediatric patients in an emergency department, much of our role is about parental education. And it’s important we get this right. A common question asked by doctors is where can we find good patient fact sheets. The trusted Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne have just created an app for this very purpose.
Kids Health Info contains all the RCH patient and family fact sheets in a readable and mobile-friendly format.

Design
It’s fair to say they haven’t pushed the boat out on graphics. However, the simple green and white colour scheme and clear layout does the make the app easy to use.
The app is simple to navigate. It only has one function, which is to search for, and read, fact sheets – and this is intuitive and user-friendly. It has not crashed on me yet.

Clinical Content
This app contains facts sheets to cover all your basic paediatric emergency needs. It has topics from Farm Safety to Labial Fusion. I think you’d be hard-pushed to find a missing subject.
To find fact sheets you can browse by subject, alphabetically, or search for a topic.

FREE – worth a try…
Room for Improvement
It would be great if there was a print function allowing parents the option to print a fact sheet
Similarly, being able to email a fact sheet to a parent from the app would be excellent
Sprucing up the graphics would improve the user experience
Overall
RCH Melbourne continues to lead the way in providing great educational resources for paediatric doctors and their patients…but how are people going to use this app?
In reality, a family is only going to need one factsheet at a time, so I’m not sure families would download the app ‘just in case’.
More likely, as doctors, we can use the app to direct families to a reliable fact sheet about their particular condition. As such, being able to email or print from the app would make the app infinitely more helpful and would not take too much in the way of coding work.
These are suggestions for improvement, but should not detract from the fact that RCH (and Mike South) are a shining example in providing relevant educational resources for their staff. Hopefully other hospitals will rise to match their lead
