Nature’s gifts experienced by a small humble human heart . . . what I see, more importantly, what I experience while in nature deeply impacts me and I hope to convey that through my paintings. Currently, I am working on a piece — inspired by last year’s visit to the Ashnola River in the interior of British Columbia. The incubation period came to fruition this last month . . . and the thought “it runs through us” has visited itself upon me and taken up residence. Nature does run through us — it courses through our veins — our every cell. It is such a deep resource – one that always refreshes and fills me with awe and wonder.

After a brief respite, I am returning to my work with renewed energy. Acrylic on canvas is the medium I use. On my hikes, I develop detailed graphite sketches — this allows me to capture my initial response to the landscape. I take “back-up” photos only if I feel I may need more specific information.

Previously, I would transfer these drawings to canvas through projection, eye balling or grid scaling. Since returning to my work I am experimenting with taking small to medium canvases with me on my hikes and drawing right on them. There are many material details to work out and I am enjoying the learning process.

Virginia Boulay Artist Bio
Virginia Boulay was born in 1954 in Vancouver, British Columbia. Her passion for nature was awakened by her girlhood years spent on her Grand Parents acreage set on the banks of the Alouette River in Maple Ridge. Moving to Alberta further nurtured her love of nature and her enthusiasm for hiking. Exploring the prairie, foothill and mountain landscapes, Virginia discovers unique and fresh responses to the land, giving them voice on her canvas.
Complementing an already successful career as a Graphic Designer and Illustrator, Virginia began painting in the early 90′s.
Virginia’s work has also graced the faces of 4 Royal Canadian Mint coins with subjects ranging from Grizzly Bears to Cozy Christmastime scenes.
Currently, she lives in Calgary, Alberta exhibiting in Waterton Lakes National Parks, Banff National Park and holds an annual fall home/studio show. Virginia’s works are held in both private and corporate collections throughout North America as well a Internationally.
