Romance ranked third among the top five fiction circulators in libraries, combined print and ebook, according to LJ’s Materials Survey 2014, and librarians will want to know all they can about what’s available and what’s hot. Since LJ began reviewing original romance ebooks in mid-2011, we have worked with a number of publishers new to our pages and opened a fresh world of content and services for libraries and their users.
Simultaneously, a certain numerically named novel that features erotic elements blasted its way to the top of best sellers lists and library holds shelves. Ebook romance and erotica were off and running. Among the companies bringing the fruit of these endeavors to readers are Samhain Publishing and Riptide Publishing. And reviewers seem quite taken with the output so far. Of Aleksandr Voinov and L.A. Witt’s If It Drives from Riptide, LJ’s reviewer wrote, “Erotica takes the stage front and center in this edgy tale of role reversal.” Cynthia D’Alba’s Texas Fandango from Samhain lets readers “enjoy the sensual fun in the sun…. This latest offering gives readers a sexy escape and a reason to seek out D’Alba’s earlier titles”.

Before launching Riptide, she edited for Avalon Publishing, Pearson/NAF, and Upper Deck Entertainment, where she worked on properties ranging from World of Warcraft to Yu-Gi-Oh. She freelanced for many years, helping self-published clients hit national lists, secure six-figure deals with traditional publishers, and even win a Foreward Book of the Year award. She is also a gay romance author who’s been privileged enough to support herself entirely with her writing.
Sarah Frantz - Senior Editor, Riptide Publishing
Before joining Riptide, she was a tenured professor of English literature at Fayetteville State University and reviewed m/m and BDSM romance for the popular review site Dear Author. She has a Ph.D. from the University of Michigan, edited two academic anthologies, is founder and past president of the International Association for the Study of Popular Romance, and has published academic articles on Jane Austen, J.R. Ward, Suzanne Brockmann, Joey W. Hill, and popular romance fiction.
Heather Osborn - Editorial Director, Samhain Publishing
A former bookseller, she transitioned to editing 10 years ago, starting out in digital publishing, then making the move to traditional publishing by running the romance line at Tor Books, and now returning back to her digital roots at Samhain Publishing. In addition to acquiring and editing genre romance of all sorts as well as urban fantasy, Heather also runs the Retro Romance digital reprint line at Samhain. When she’s not busy working, she can be found reading for pleasure, obsessively playing RPG video games and watching entirely too much Ninja Warrior.

Celebrating her 42nd year with Library Journal, Bette-Lee also edits LJ’s Video Reviews column, six times a year Romance column, and e-original Romance reviews, which post weekly as LJ Xpress Reviews. She received the Romance Writers of America (RWA) Vivian Stephens Industry Award in 2013 for having “contributed to the genre or to RWA in a significant and/or continuing manner”
