A film documentary

A gripping tale of intrigue and mystery in the art world, the Barnes collection of Post-Impressionist paintings became the subject of a power struggle after the 1951 death of the owner. Dr. Albert Barnes collected 181 Renoirs, 69 Cézannes, 59 Matisses, 46 Picassos and many other valuable paintings. In his will Dr. Barnes had strict instructions stating the Barnes Foundation should always be an educational institution, and that the paintings may never be removed from his estate in the suburbs of Philadelphia.

Fifty years after Barnes’ death a powerful group of moneyed interests went to court for control of the art and created a new museum for the Barnes collection in Philadelphia, going against the intent of Dr. Barnes’ will. The film traces many twists and turns including Dr. Barnes’ strategy to leave the management of his collection to Lincoln University, and the involvement of the state of Pennsylvania in the ultimate outcome.

Not rated, 101 minutes. Directed by Don Argott with appearances by Dr. Albert C. Barnes, former NAACP Chairman Julian Bond, former President of the Barnes Foundation Richard H. Glanton, former Philadelphia mayor John Street, former governor Ed Rendell and others.

Presented in partnership with Encore Learning.
