2014-09-04

The craft stores know something you don’t know. That’s right. It’s time for the 2014 Halloween Season TV Preview! This is where we let you know about the time and channel for everything we can find on TV having to do with Halloween or Horror for the month of October and sometimes late September. This will include holiday specials, horror movies, TV show premier dates and Halloween episodes of your favorite series as well as documentaries that might be considered scary. Anything and everything that might get your ghost good.

I always start with TCM because you can tell they take such care in developing their lineup. Be sure to check out their Thursday nights. This is truly a unique year for that station.

A quick note: We are not going to be able to get it all. So many different markets and channels and providers… it’s impossible for me to compile a full list, but we will update it throughout the entire season. That means you can check back for updates and when we update this article we’ll post it on Facebook and Tweet it out to you. Make sure to follow us in the best way for you. Also note, schedules change. We work in Eastern Stand Time unless otherwise noted. Occasionally schedule are listed in terms of broadcast day instead of 24 hour day. We will try to make a note of this so you can set your DVR’s. If we find out that something changes, we’ll change it on this article. Let us know when you have updates or find something we should add. This is a community effort for the community.

In addition to the programming guide below please take some time to focus on the upcoming Blu-ray and DVD releases during the Halloween season including September and October. Shawn Savage has compiled your shopping list for you, so that you won’t miss a pre-order and keep your wallet nice and light (to save room for more candy on Halloween night of course). There’s a shit ton of amazing entries here including a cavalcade of Scream Factory releases, Prom Night from Synapse, the infamous Nekromantik, some Godzilla Blu-rays and the much anticipated The Blob 88 from Twilight Time! It’s all there! We will update this schedule as things change.

Now on with the shows!

TURNER CLASSIC MOVIES (TCM)

SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 01, 2014

TCM has been my staple for horror viewing during October for the past couple of years. This year they have gone about the Horror theme in a somewhat unique manner, and I friggin’ love it. Each Thursday during Primetime they are showing a night of ghost stories. Some of these you will know and love especially as we get closer to Halloween, but there’s a real chance here for our viewers to explore some old favorites that involve ghosties that you’ve never seen before (that goes for me too). I’m looking forward to setting my DVR each night and learning something about old time ghost tales. I hope this plays in with my love of old time horror radio.

Encore has many stations from which to choose and nearly all of them might have some Halloween related programming on though understand that these are primarily movie channels. Most of the month of October on Encore Suspense has a little something to help your merriment along however we’ll post the Halloween Day schedule since it seems to be focused on holiday programming. The complete schedule is available for all Encore channels.

Last year was on October 31st Encore Suspense did a full day of Halloween programming. We await this year’s schedule from Starz/Encore as soon as it is available.

The Simpsons annual Halloween offering, The Treehouse of Horror, now in its 25th installment release date has not as of yet been determined. We will post new artwork and update as soon as we receive the announcement and any preview of what horrors will come.

AMC will be announcing their annual Walking Dead schedule shortly.  Each night reruns will air in anticipation for the new season airing Sunday October 12th at 9pm. Saturday and Sunday on the weekend of the season premiere is usually filled with an all day marathon of episodes. Walk Like You’re Dead. Talk Like You’re Dead.  Also shortly there after you’ll find the new episode of Dead Already from The Liberal Dead, the unofficial Walking Dead podcast this year featuring Heather Seebach of *Viewer Discretion Advised.

ABC Family’s schedule for October has not yet been announced in full, however we do have one special announcement.

ABC Family just picked up the new show Freak Out! Look for the premiere this October during 13 Nights of Halloween.

From Freaked Out:

Each episode of “Freak Out” will feature an unsuspecting mark, whose fears come to life before their eyes with elaborate special effects, intricate makeup, twisted actors, and multiple cameras capturing the scenario from every angle. Every frighteningly hilarious prank is deviously tailored with help from the victim’s friends and family to turn an everyday situation into someone’s scary moment, until they realize – they’ve been pranked.

DISNEY CHANNEL

Monstober is upon us again this year. You can check on the site HERE. This is the best for the kids. Truly fun horror and spook shows. The Disney Channel generally does a great job of this year round anyway. Of course if you get a chance to make your way to Disney World or Disney Land you’ll be treated to a decorated nightmare land… lite.

The “Monstober” schedule has not been announced yet. Coming soon.

THE FOOD NETWORK

While we await the schedule and formal announcement of Halloween Wars for a Fifth Season, jump through the link below, see who won last year and enjoy the clips on the Food Network. This is a new Halloween tradition with my family. We love picking our favorites and this gives me a chance to introduce the fam to some of the horror guest hosts who show up. Tom Savini, Rob Zombie… who will it be this year?

FX NETWORKS

FX has the premiere of American Horror Story: Freakshow coming at you this October 8 at 10PM, and before that they’ll be running some reruns of previous installments. Get ready for a disturbing new theme filled with uncomfortable imagery and max star power. Both Kathy Bates and Jessica Lange won Emmys for last year’s Coven!  As always a number of the cast are returning this year, and the teasers have started.

SYFY CHANNEL

SyFy will be running a 31 Days of Halloween series each day during the month of October. Titles vary. A rather eclectic and somewhat nontraditional approach to some of the titles, but I can say that it’s nice to see the change up. Now realize that the SyFy channel hosts Face Off and a horde of original features as well as Twilight Zone re-runs. There’s always something Halloweeny to watch. I’m focusing on features they are listing as part of the 31 Days listing. Full schedule at the link below thought we are still awaiting the 2014 schedule. I’ve noted their Face Off and Ghost Hunters marathons below and a few original features though those air every day. I’ve mostly focused on their 31 Days of Halloween coverage. 28th through 31st are missing as of this post but will be updated when available.
