Jay Gruden and the Washington Redskins have added the final addition to their 2015 coaching staff, hiring Robb Akey as Defensive Line Coach. Akey replaced Jacob Burney, who was fired at the end of this season.
Akey joins Defensive Coordinator Joe Barry’s staff from the Minnesota Vikings. Akey only has one year NFL experience, serving as Assisant Defensive Line coach in Minnesota last season. Prior to that, Akey spent 25 season at the collegiate level, including as head coach at the University of Idaho for six seasons. Akey spent eight seasons at Washington State as the team’s defensive coordinator from 2003-06.
The Redskins connection comes from Joe Barry. Barry and Akey coached together int he late 1990s at Northern Arizona. The addition of Akey completes the staff and ushers in six new coaches to the Gruden coaching staff.
