Question: I’m having difficulty deciding how I should plan the layout of my new kitchen. What are some ideas for designing a fully functional kitchen ideal for every day use and for entertaining guests?

Recently, I’ve focused on functional kitchen designs, and why not? Kitchens are where we usually start the day, either with a hot cup of coffee or reading up on the day’s current events. And with the holidays around the corner, the kitchen will soon take center stage as you prepare for festive dinner parties and large family gatherings.

I absolutely love designing functional kitchens with beautiful, luxury amenities! There’s really no limit when it comes to this area of your home. Whether you’re looking for a functional space with lots of visual appeal or a kitchen worthy of a professional chef, there’s always a way to add (or take away) from your current kitchen design to truly make it your own.

1.) Consider “Enhancement” Appliances

If you start the day with a cup of coffee, then consider incorporating a built-in coffee system into your kitchen so you can indulge in a luxury caffeine experience every morning. The Whole Bean Built-In Coffee System by Miele offers the seasoned coffee lover a warming drawer to preheat cups and store other items, such as food and plates.

For aspiring chefs, Miele’s steam oven features injection steam, so you can consistently create succulent four course meals. If you don’t consider this oven for your new kitchen, you’ll definitely regret it!

2.) Cabinets are Key

When choosing kitchen cabinets, you must keep two things in mind — the material and how your items will be organized and stored. Pull-out cabinets are highly functional and visually appealing. You’ll be able to store everything from spice racks and bottles to bowls and dishes while avoiding awkward, deep corners. For smaller spaces in urban environments, rolling cabinets are great for maximizing your floor plan. It can also serve as a butcher block, additional storage space and so much more.

3.) Don’t Overlook the Layout

One of my favorite aspects of kitchen design is creating a lively entertainment space as well as an efficient meal preparation area. Kitchen islands can be used for socializing, meal prep and food service. For such a high-traffic room, islands provide additional seating, a place to store extra appliances and supplemental space for multiple chefs to work and enjoy time together.

A good kitchen design allows for movement between the kitchen and other living areas. A breakfast bar that transitions into a family room or other comfortable space provides a great spot for dining in relaxation.
