As we approach the final month of 2016’s summer movie season, that buzz of the major fall releases is starting to mount, louder and louder with each day.
Just days after the Toronto International Film Festival announced the first wave of its 2016 lineup, the Venice Film Festival has announced its major titles in and out of competition. The 73rd edition of the festival shares several notable films with Toronto, including Tom Ford’s long-anticipated Nocturnal Animals, Denis Villenuve’s Arrival, and Damien Chazelle’s Whiplash follow-up La La Land, which will open the festival on August 31.
Curiously, Venice will be closed out by Toronto’s opening film, Antoine Fuqua’s remake of The Magnificent Seven, which will hit theaters just after its appearance at both festivals. Other notable titles from Venice’s competition slate include Pablo Larrain’s Jackie, with Natalie Portman portraying Jackie Kennedy Onassis; Mel Gibson’s World War II-set directorial comeback feature, Hacksaw Ridge; Terrence Malick’s IMAX-format origins-of-the-universe documentary Voyage of Time; and The Light Between Oceans, the latest from Blue Valentine director Derek Cianfrance and starring Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander.
