WEST SACRAMENTO, CA—(Marketwired – September 08, 2016) – The California State Teachers' Retirement System today announced the appointment of Joycelyn Martinez–Wade as Director of Governmental Relations.

In her new position, Ms. Martinez–Wade will oversee CalSTRS' state and federal legislative and regulatory programs. She will represent CalSTRS at legislative hearings and with affected stakeholders on bills of interest to CalSTRS. Ms. Martinez–Wade will also present proposed legislation to the Teachers' Retirement Board while outlining staff recommendations as the board determines their legislative position.

“Over the years, Joycelyn has made her mark by providing astute legislative analyses and strategic perspectives which helped CalSTRS successfully navigate the complex legislative and regulatory environment through a very crucial period for our organization,” said CalSTRS Deputy Chief Executive Officer for Plan Design and Communication Ed Derman.

Ms. Martinez–Wade arrived at CalSTRS in 2008 as an Associate Governmental Program Analyst to a unit then known as Governmental Affairs and Program Analysis. She was promoted to Legislative Affairs manager in 2013. In that role, she was responsible for managing the development and review of legislative proposals and analyses prepared for the Teachers' Retirement Board, the California Legislature and the Governor.

Ms. Martinez–Wade's career includes experience as a research analyst with the Little Hoover Commission and more than five years in the State Assembly as an Assembly Fellow, Legislative Assistant, Legislative Director and Capitol Director. Ms. Martinez–Wade graduated from Stanford University in 2001 with a Bachelor of Arts in political science.
