Nothing says peace like a lavish parade of children being carried on litters by large men. This is the new New Orleans, where Elijah wears green fitted T-shirts and pretends to be in charge as his brother continues to undermine him. Elijah went seriously off the reservation in last night’s episode of The Originals declaring finally that he will no longer curb his desires to save his brother’s feelings, but go after whatever he wants. Let’s hope that means that Elijah is finally going to get laid. It’s been a long time since Katherine and he is in some serious need of loving. Between Elijah’s failed attempts at peace, Marcel’s new pad, Hayley’s kingdom, and the witches stuff there’s a whole lot to talk about.

Let’s go with the worst plot line first. Marcel. Why is Marcel still here? Like Diego says, he lost. He needs to get over it and get out of dodge. It looks like he has escaped to Derek Hale’s loft, but he is determined to get back to New Orleans. Diege gives Marcel the best advice he’s gotten in months. Go Diego Go. With the witches and the werewolves challenging the Mikaelsons a band of pissed off vampires has no chance.  His drum orgy stunt may have gained him some followers, but it also lost him his Newsie. Without the Mikaelson’s allegiance vampires are by far the weakest element in New Orleans. Since they’re numbers are dwindling even humans could take them out. They have no leverage and no hope of getting back to the top. Marcel would need to make allies of the witches and the werewolves to stand a chance, which is never going to happen. There’s got to be a reason Marcel is still on this television program, but as of yet it is hard to say what that reason is.

Listening to Marcel and Thierry argue did bring to light one interesting aspect of The Originals, the language. When Marcel and Thierry are talking you are transported from the grungy world of New Orleans to the modern day. Their argument was rife with terms like “ass”, “hook up”, and “get rolling”. The contrast between their way of speaking and Klaus’ refined old school talk was more apparent in this episode than in the past. Klaus and Elijah may use cell phones, but they have been around for over a thousand years and it shows. Though they have grown accustomed to the changes in society throughout time their language still suggests their age. Genevieve has a similar way of speaking, which helps remind the audience that she has been dead for ninety years. The writers are doing a great job of creating a divide between the old and the new and the language of the show has sneakily become a defining characteristic of this divide. It also makes Marcel and his followers seem more impulsive and naive, which they are (see above).

Those Deverauxs need to clear out of New Orleans. With Sophie and her sister dead we may have had a respite from the Deveraux nagging, but Monique has swiftly taken her aunt’s place as the most frustrating witch since Bonnie Bennet. She makes you want to be BFFs with Davina and Genevieve. The ancestors may communicating through you Monique, but you are not the most important person in the world. That is obviously Klaus. With Monique on a tear, Davina does not receive any gifts at the witch festival. Davina and the blond girl (does anyone remember her name?) could totally take Monique out, but Davina is too upset by the snub to realize Monique is a jerk. Luckily Klaus is able to save the day with the best gift EVER. Josh’s freedom and the daylight ring spell. Was the ring in the box the werewolf ring? Is Klaus attempting to make a moonlight/daylight ring. Hybrids don’t need daylight rings so what would the point of a double duty ring be? There may be a new edition of prop watch in the future if that’s the case.

Klaus’ show of good will towards Josh and Davina should sway Josh to leave Marcel out of his life, but it seems that Josh has gone and picked the losing side again. Also Josh, we love you but we know you were a “club kid” stop bringing it up every two seconds, it’s annoying. What has yet to be explored is Josh’s sexuality. Davina should set him up with some hot warlock so that they can form their own peace treaty. Josh is a significantly underused character. The episodes with him, Davina, and Camille forming an underdog interspecies team were great. He’s obviously on the show to stay and now that Klaus has freed him needs to find his place in New Orleans.

The strangest part of this episode is Hayley’s new status as werewolf queen. It is understandable that given her connections to the Mikaelsons, the baby, and her ancestry that the werewolves would look to her as a leader, but why has that resulted in zombie werewolves showing up at her doorstep. The silent line of wolves standing in her hard was far creepier than Marcel’s blood & death orgy. Werewolves are not dumb, their pretty much normal humans. If they wanted to pay their respects to Hayley wouldn’t they walk up and introduce themselves? The blind following and waiting for instruction made the werewolves seem like Dany’s unsullied. It was weird. The final scene of Hayley at the camp fire surrounded by her new family was much more palatable. It’s nice that she’s happy for a time since the witches are about to come after her baby AGAIN.

Klaus and Cami’s relationship hit a new level of trust this week. Cami is still trying to save her uncle, which is great. She is the one character on this show that isn’t wishy washy about their goals. She simply wants to save her uncle, which is admirable however impossible it might be. Despite the obvious chemistry Klaus and Cami are far better as friends than they could be as lovers. In the world of back stabbing brothers and evil witches Klaus is in serious need of a friend and Cami is in serious need of protection. Marcel is never going to give her that while on his death crusade. Cami should stick with her original notion and remain on Klaus’ side. There’s no way he isn’t going to win.

What did you think of last night’s episode? Will Josh find love? Will Hayley ever have this baby? Where will the witches go from here? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.
