Could the eponymous “superfruit” be…a pineapple under the sea? The YouTube duo, perhaps known better in some places as Scott Hoying and Mitch Grassi of the smash-hit a cappella group Pentatonix, ended up being the perfect candidates to promote Nickelodeon’s upcoming film, The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water. Hoying and Grassi even appear in an MTV commercial for the movie:

The kicker? Some of that ink from the spot is real! Though Hoying is a fan, he’s just playing for the camera here, but Grassi is officially tatted up with a permanent SpongeBob fan tattoo. Followers of MTV’s Instagram account may have noticed when the duo staged a “takeover” on Tuesday, sharing a number of photos and videos from the tattooing and the commercial itself, like this fun before-and-after. The tattoo artist, Romeo Lacoste, also has a video on his channel showing the whole process more in-depth, with a time-lapse of the design getting applied. And just yesterday, the SUP3RFRUIT channel posted their own video showing it off – as well as Grassi’s truly impressive SpongeBob trivia knowledge. What’s more fun than when the people you’re super-fans of are also super-fans of something themselves? While you may love or hate that yellow sponge, we all definitely love the trend of celebrity fanboys, and we hope it only continues to grow.

Could you best Mitch Grassi in a SpongeBob-off? Or do you have any super-fan tattoos of your own? Share with us in the comments below! The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge out of Water hits theaters this Friday, February 6th.
