While all of us Emma Approved fans are in withdrawal during the show’s second hiatus, Pemberley Digital had an exciting announcement today: a new scripted adaptation of Mary Shelley’s classic novel Frankenstein. Even more exciting, Pemberley Digital is teaming up with PBS Digital, which would make it the first scripted web series from PBS Digital.

The adaptation, titled Frankenstein M.D., will follow the exploits of young doctor Victoria Frankenstein as she battles for recognition and glory in a male-dominated world. Airing in eight episodes per month, the series promises to be similar to Pemberley Digital’s previous efforts, including not only You Tube but also transmedia storytelling. A start date has not yet been announced.

The choice of Frankenstein, written by Mary Shelley at age 18 and published in the year 1818, is in many ways a departure from Pemberley Digital’s earlier works, which include the Emmy-winning adaptation of Jane Austen’s masterpiece Pride and Prejudice (The Lizzie Bennet Diaries), the LBD spin-off and adaptation of Jane Austen’s unfinished novel Sanditon (Welcome to Sanditon), and of course the ongoing adaptation of Austen’s Emma (Emma Approved). While still an English novel published in the early nineteenth century by a female author, the focus and themes of Frankenstein are  far removed from the several-families-in-a-small-country-village, romance-heavy plots of Austen’s novels. It will be interesting to see how the darker themes and technological commentary of Shelley’s novel are translated into modern times by Pemberley Digital’s capable team.

Stay tuned this week for more Pemberley-Digital-related news items, including the return of Emma Approved recaps!
